Larry R e b ic h (Yam ) took over second. with " BO" McCutchen pi cking up th ird. McCuthen put the move on Reb ich for seco nd in th e rn oto , but Shockey was long go ne wit h an easy m ota win . Rebich hung onto third for th e first mota. Shockey again got the holeshot for the first go -round of the 125cc Experts . with Mike O be rd ing and Kenny Gollagoes picking u p second and th ir d . Gollagoes moved past Oberding for second and set out after Shockey but time ran out with Shockey first , Gollagoes second and Oberding holding off Lew Alter for third. Puddly wasted no time in the second O pen Expert moto , as he grabbed the hol esho t with Mc Cu tc hen right behind . McCu t ch e n m oved past Pudd ly for a time but a WFO tr ip down the sand h ill p ut h im back into the lead , where he stayed the rest of the mota . Shoc key moved u p to second after a bad start, but ran off the side of a hill long enough to let McC utchen fini sh second , which was good enough for the overall win . Shockey's third gained him second overall with P u d dl y claiming third . Shockey scored his third holeshot in the final 125cc Expert round with Ke n n y Gollagoes right behind . Gollagoes moved past Shockey when he bobbled on an uphill section of the very tricky co urse. Lew Alter claimed third spot. Shockey and Gollagoes raced ' only a few feet apart the entire race with Kenny Gollagoes pulling ahead to stay and win with Shockey claiming second and second overall. Alter scored third , which was good enough for third overa ll. Resul ts in Resul ts Section. Dowers digs out Washington's 100 By Larry Ulrich CENTRAL OR , FEB . 19 The weekend of February 18th through 20th was a three-day job because of old George's birthday. So 240 desert freaks celeb ra ted his birthday by tra veli ng to the high desert of Central Oregon to do what they like bes t , desert racing. They came from Sparks. Altruas, Yakima , Spokane, Seattle, Po rtla n d and everywhere else . And what a day it was . The weather was fantastic , short sleeve . The track sported no dust and good traction. A 10 a.m . start was a first for Central Oregon desert races. It was the usual dead -engine start, but inst ead of a banner or shotgun , a ligh t plane circled the smoke bomb . Skyd ivers wou ld jump from the p lane. a nd when they popped thei r chuts t he ri ders would start thei r engines and go to the smoke bom b. At th is point, a ll engines we re dead and tension was very high . Fina lly, after what see med like 15 m in ut es, two divers appeared from t he plane. Although no c hute was seen. someone fired up his b ike and then everyone followed su it. At the seven -mile poin t , Bill Dowers was in the lead. With bikes and rid ers looking pretty much a like it was hard to tell who was who. Then. Dusty Coppage, the veteran desert rider , was running about 20th_ After 109 miles . he managed a third place overall and second O pen Expe rt . Later. Dowers was still lea ding with Dea n Cod d in gt on in second. Later at the p its I was told tha t Cod d ington came in grinning a nd asked "How'd I do? " H e ha d not entered a nd was just practicing for that one lap . R id e rs from Alturas , C alifornia , were co mpeting on this high desert for the first time. Ke n Glaster (Alt uras) pushed h is 175cc Yam a ha to first place in the 200cc class, a nd his friend Au di e McCombs m an a ged sixth 250cc Ama teur on his H ond a . T h e ot her Altu ras finis her was Jim Killingbeck with a 13th p lace, 200 . First across t he finis h line was Dowers, but no t Bill.
