Go a head , tak e a d ri ve on wh at 's known as " the world's most famou s beach ." Climate Daytona during Speed W eek has been kn own to be a p lac e of extremes. It can be a paradise or it can be cold with a chill ocean breeze. Prepare for both op tio ns , but put you r money on t he.sun and take an extra tube of sun tan lotion. Food There are eno ugh restaurants in and around Daytona to satisfy even the m'6st discriminating taste buds. Our suggestion is to check the listings in the Yellow Pages for ideas before setting out. , Florida and seafood go hand In hand . R estaurants specializing in delicacies from the deep abound in Da ytona and surrounding areas with prices to fit any budget. One of our fa vorite's is The Captain's Table which offers goo d food and all our fa vorite thirst quenchers , There is a Mexican restaurant a lthough the names escapes 'us lo cated across the street from R obison 's Harley -Da vidson whi ch serves plenty of hot and tasty d ish es. On the steak and prime rib side of life, Julian's is a top choice . For th ose who like their menu va ried, th e Valle's Steak H ous e and The Beef a nd Bottle (fra nchise) restaurants offe r a good meal. If you want to spend a night on th e town and mon ey is no object, th en tr y the followin g : .T he King's Cella r offers stea k and sea foo d with a view of th e ocean and attentive service plus an intim at e ·a t m osp h e re . A m e al a t Gene's Steak H ouse is n o t easily forgotte n. H owever , Gene 's is so popular th at reservati ons during Speed W eek are a lmost impossible to come by. Chez Bruch ez offers Fre nch cuisi ne prep ared to d eligh t gourmets. Reserv ati ons are a must at this esta blish me nt, as is proper dress. Entertainment . The police in Da ytona are t here to help you enj oy you rself and not to ru in your fu n . For th e m ost p art th ey a re cou rteous a nd will in g to assist if you need it. They a re also ready to do busin ess with you if you ae dum b en ough to tempt them. By the time Speed Week rolls around, Daytona ha s already been t hro ugh the sports car hordes from the 24 .Hou rs of Da ytona and the NASCAR "good ole boys" from the Dayton a 500 . They a re also aware that in a few short weeks the co llege . Easter va cti on crowd will d escend upon the town . The police , having had their pati ence tried three times in a short five-week span are not prone to funnin '. People who get int o trouble usually ask for it. If you ride on the 24 miles of beach open to traffic, obey th e 10 mph speed lim it. It gives you time to enjoy ' th e ocean, the beach tootsies and the variety of machinery which always seem s to tum up . The cops fr own on speeders. If you get thirsty once in awhile and carry your own supply , don't chug-alug on the beach whether moving or parked . Regardlessjpf wh at you' ve hea rd , it is aga inst th e la w to drink on th e beach a nd although T he Man might just look th e other way some of the time , taking the chance of getting busted and having to spen d yo u r vaca tio n money to ge t your butt out of jail is a poor risk . There is pl en ty of free parking on the bea ch , but if you plan on leav in g you r veh icle for an extended period of time , th en be su re you know when high tide is. It may sou nd like a silly preca uti on , but if you've ever seen wha t happens to a ca r left too close to th e ocean when the tide comes in you 'll kn ow wh y it's bett er to be sa fe th a n sorry. Another item to re member is th a t while t he sa nd where th e traffic rolls is p acked ha rd , the sand whe re you park may not be. If you choose to park in the soft stu ff, be prepa red to ea se your vehicle carefu lly ou t of its spot .or risk bu rying it up to the axles. If you th ink you 're getting stuc k , ask for a helpful push ou t befor e sinking too deeply. If all else fails you ca n defla te your rear tires unt il they are very sof t sin ce the m or e roIling a rea on the sand, the bett er . c ha nce o f tra ct ion and m o vem ent . You sho uld a lso keep in mind th a t there is no campi ng allowed anywhere on th e beach . In addition , a recently e n a c te d ordi na nce prohibits an y parking or vehicu la r tra ffic on t he bea ch between th e hours of 3 a .m. and 6 a .m. If you a re still partying durin g thos e hours it would be best not to hit th e bea ch unless you do it by foot. Bikers will find plenty of parking and mac hi nes of every con ce ivable des crip tion in the area of Main .Street . To see and be seen seems to be th e motto of a la rge portion of th e crowd which flocks to Da ytona for Speed Week. so if you 're a people wa tcher , a . browser , a bar hopper or just a stroller, you should make a visit to the boardwalk amusement area and Main Street. The crowd picks up o n Thursday and becomes almost elbow to elb ow on Friday; by Saturday it see ms as if everyo ne in th e ent ire town has assembled th emselves in th e few sm a ll blocks th at make up the "scene ." Some places of note wort h seeing are th e numerous shirt shops and th eir wizards of the a ir brush wh o can spin ou t any design on a tee shi n you can t hink of and a few that will probably stagger th e imagination. The Rat's Hol e is th e most famou s of the shops and carries not only shi rts, but a wh ole line of thing-a -majigs. T hu rsday throu gh Sat urday are also c ru isi n' n ights, bumper to bumper style a round th e streets that intersect wit h Ma in Street. Or you can cruise on foo t and inspect the loca l esta blishmen ts tha t serve the de m on brew. In any eve nt the po lice will be tryin g th eir best to keep th e traffic, both foot and vehicu lar , moving . So wh en they tell you to moveon - don' t a rgue. Special entertainment Whether it 's bumper ca rs, a n hockey or electronic horse ra cing, the am use ment arcade has it. You ca n also get you r for tune tol d by a m a ch ine or p lay any number of elect ro nic Pong or war games. T he boardwa lk area a lso features a sig htseeing tower and a suspended one bucket ride to the end of the fish ing pi er and back. 1978 marks the 13th year that Roxy Ro ckw ood , the dean of mo torcycle ra ce a nno u ncers, will be hostin g th e WEBCO Mot orcycle Celeb ri ty (rad io) Show. The half hour show is b roadcast live at '10 :30 p .m. March 6-12 from th e Hawaiian Inn on South Atl antic Avenue. The show then continues at least another ha lf hour on Monday through Wednesday with it stretching to probably two hours during th e rest of Speed Week . Roxy has the kn ack of getting th e most famous names in tow on the show and you will probably hear more inside scoop at the show than anywhere else . If you are a Kenny Roberts fan , King Kenny will be doing his thing on Thursday night . The show has always been a favorite with the racers and fans alike , so don't be 25
