CA , FEB . 12 Phil Jacobson kept it all together on his KTM at the Los Ga tos M.C.'s second Hare Scram bles of the seas on . The win at Hollister ORV Pa rk p ut Jacobson in contention in the Cross County Yellow Plate chase. For the second week, Northern California weather ' was the big equalizer. The 125cc classes, Vets and Old Timers took off at 9 :00 a .rn . in a mist that soon turned to a sp rinkle, and then all-out rain. Long time-racer Joh~ Silva made it look eas y taking the Vets Junior win on his YZ 400. John " Ba rbwire" Ba lzer did the same number on his Yamaha to take the Novice class ahead of Ri ch Carlson's Honda -powered , Bulta coframed mount. Mike Arthur crossed the finish line , a t th e bottom of a steep ' slippery hill with a left at the bottom (wheel), as th ird Vet Novice. Old Timers Rod Brazel and Jack Shields looked comfortable on th eir ITs and rode the distance in that order. Ned Marandino con tinued his winn ing ways to take the JuniorI Exp ert class ahead of Bill Austin and Bill O 'Brian. The 125cc Juniors were reall y smo kin' around the challenging course , with Kent Woods and H arry Bellicitti taki ng home trophies for their efforts. Doug Dewitt did the deed in th e Novice class. Sensation of the day,. Mike Kelly , took second on his 100cc Yamaha in his first time out on a race course! Mike , a sm all 14-year-old and about 80 pounds , proved that you don't have to be b ig to take a motorcycle around a tough course: Joe Vasquez , also on one of th e po tent 100cc Yamahas , took third after experiencing shifter problems. 29-ye ar-old Vasquez , winner of the last race here, makes this sport a fami ly affair with his wife and children as a very enthusiastic pi t crew. T he 250cc class got a repeat of last week's weather at P lym outh . A complete downpour didn't slow down Dick Ridley as he took command from the holeshot and rode to th e fini sh a wet but pleased winner. Stylish Ron Knarr took second with Jerry J ackson third . Junior Bruce Bowman blasted out a repeat win as he d id in the las t ra ce. Jimbo Felice, scrambles and sho rt track ace , was second with Dan Bowdon third. Da ve Lafaille had control of the fast -changing track (the cr eeks were rising) and won the No vice class ahead of Jime Dieu and Mike Brumit. Paul Swinney slid in for fourth . A .b reak in the weather put th e busy Los Gatos club members to work changing the course. T he n Phil Jacobson , really pumped after last week's ride, took off and sta rted a disappearing act in the b ig- bore go. Gary Vanderpool was charging from a last place sta rt that ca rried him to an incredible second on the first lap . A tangle near the to p of the tricky u p hill left a tied -for-the-points -lead Greg T u ller with a broken leg . A lack of su pport by the National Motorcycle Patrol showed us how much we miss them when we need them . But riders like Scott Austin , in motorcycle sty le, sacrificed their ride and stayed with Tuller to eventually help h im off th e hill. We hope he mends quick an d well .
