IBelow ) SoOOba had a few water crossings. for the 500cc Pro class win as a bonus , overcom ing tough competition from Larry Roesel er (H us) and Jim Fishba ck (Yam ). Roeseler finished behind Balentine closing fast. Another la p and he may have overtaken him . Speedway star Jim Fishback took third overall , fi rst 250cc to pick u p the $500 for that class win. The 125cc class winner was still undecided as this article was being written. The Soboba Grand Prix is traditiona lly a low finisher race and th is year's event proved to be no exception . When riders started pitting at the end of t he first lap o ut of simple exhaustion , the pit crews knew it was going to be a long afternoon . The 15mile course consisted of two deep water crossings , one mud and t he other rocky , sand canyons (up and down), a tough downhi ll , ridge running, switchbacks and two miles down the river back to the p its. The sand ca n yons proved to be the to ughest as they soon deteriorated into deep whoopers . Only rider in really good shape cou ld hand le them at speed as the laps wore on . The crossings and the downhill were the favorite spectator spots for those hardy enough to hike in . Malcolm Smith was he lping out and was a t the downhi ll when the Pros came th rough on the first lap . Most were impressive but Steve Bauer (DG) never let off as he flew halfway down, hit , gassed it , and landed at the bottom, leaving the spectators and Malcolm . totally amazed. A number of fast la'd ies were 1 entered , including Sue Fish (Yam who was running near th e top 10 when ~ she crashed hard on the th ird lap' putting her out of th e ra ce. Cherry ~ Sto ckton was reportedly being filmed for a "Women in Sports" episode and · was doing quite well. T eam Honda 's Rick Munyon , who will be campaigning a four -stroke machine on th e National Enduro circuit, rode his practice bike , a new CR,250R and looked smooth . He was in contention for a pay off spot in the 250cc Pro class. The lead changed several times!) between the leaders for the eig ht laps ' and the Pros and everyone else who could keep up went eig ht laps. Most of the Sportsman struggled to six laps though a nd were glad to not have to go anymo re. OCMC Novice Danny McClain (KTM) was looking pretty fast . on the six th la p and was disappointed he didn't make seven . The on ly discontent on an ot herwise bea utifu l weekend of racing was that many of th e riders felt they got ripped off by the camping fees. A b unch of Maywood M.C . guys showed u p to pit for Bruce Ogilvie (H -D) and since they didn 't have a camping pass which allowed them the pr ivilege of camping for a mere .three dollars, they were charged $10 for a p lace to park overnight. And it wasn't even in the same place wh er e everyone else got to J cam p . The Pros weren't too happy to have to pay the th ree do llars to camp after coughing up $50 for an entry fee either. On the other hand , the 60~ burritos were very good . Official resu lts in a week or so . •
