for two laps. Staten regained the lead and kept it for the remainder of the race. Shultz held second. Gumbmann was relieved of third by Dennis Brand. Things went pretty much according to pla n in the second moto . Shultz got the holesho t but Sta ten moved into first before two laps were com pe lted. Koj ii Ma suda , Larry Wosick , Gumbmann a nd Brand a rgued over third. Brand finally pulled ahead of Masuda to take it. Coming into a com er , Shultz had the bead of the fro nt tire pull off the rim. Losing a few la ps while th e tu be was stuffed ba ck in and air refilled , Shultz reentered the fray, hoping for an overa ll finish in the top 10. In the overall po int standings , Brand could tie Shultz by finishing second if Darrell scored no po ints and would take the larger share of Suzuki point money by fin ishing better in t~e series' finale. Shultz ended up 10th In the second moto, fin ishing sixth overall and taking second in the series behind Staten. In the day's finish , Brand took secon d, followed by Gumbmann (4 -4), Wosick (5-5) , Masuda (9 ·3) and Shultz (2-10). 125cc Pro Gary Denton, on an AI Baker R&D Suzuki , took the lead in the first moto, with Danny Turner and Donnie Cantaloupi's Moto-X Fox Yamaha on his ta ilpipe. Two riders went out on t he first lap. Brian Myerscough , the onl y rider with a chance of catching T urner in the points, went out on the second tu m with an engin e th a t wou ldn't stay lit . Pa t Ric hter unloaded ha rd and went to the hosp ital with a leg broken in th ree places. About five la ps into the race , Turner passed Denton and kept the lead to the fin ish . Cantaloupi also passed Denton, and kept the pressure on Turner, though never close enough to strike. With onl y two laps to go , Denton, tired and fighting a bent shift lever , was passed by DG's Willy Simons. Behind Denton, Jeff Ward 's FMF Suzuki filled out the top five. Dave Taylor on a DG Suzuki, led Turner and the gang ou t of the first comer in the second moto . Taylor, however , had lost a ll the damping from his rear shocks in the first moto and decided to call a halt before the end of th e first lap . Turn er went on to cruise to victory on a track where he'd lost last yea r' s Golde n Sta te Ser ies Cha m pionship by inches. Denton rode in second for most of the race, but as in the first moto, lost it with two laps to go . This time it was Ca ntalou pi who got by. It d id n't really matter; if Denton had staved him off, Ca nt alou pi would still have been second and Dent on thi rd . Bria n Myerscough , riding an R&D Su zu ki , extricated h im self fro m a battle with Wa rd and finished fou rth , moving up strongly on the leaders. Simons finished sixth , for fourth overa ll behind Dent on. • THE SACHS/Hercules 7-SPEED ENDURO "We Can't Imagine You Getting Any More For The Money" ilIitI As §tat nl In ,as.
