CA , FEB. 19 The Bassett Racing Products team of "Rocket Rex" Staten and Danny Turner domina ted their respective divisions in the final round of the Continental Moto-sports Club (CMC) and Su zuki-sponsored Golden State Series motocross held at Helvetia Park and promoted by Boss MX . Staten, who came from the Seattle Kingdome Supercross and had no sleep pr ior to th e race, won four 40 ·minute rnotos to ta ke the 250cc and Open Pro classes. T urner added a no ther clean sweep' in winning the 125cc Pr o class . 8 Bo t h riders emerged as series in their divisions. Turner. who would hav e taken th e 125cc title with a top 10 fin ish a nyway, had his laurels locked u p from the start whe n prim ary opponent Br ian Myerscough dropped out of the race . with a load ed -u p , malfunctioning engine. Mai co int o second place. Shultz was the only one to stay within sight of "Rocket Rex." who lapped riders right up to fourth -placer Yamaha -mounted Robert Marino. Bob Myers , riding a Maico was third off the start. but Parry Klassen , also on Maico, quickly took his place and held it throughout the moto . Shultz grabbed the second mota ho leshot and led nearly half the moto . Staten got a middle of the pack start, later saying, " I wanted to see if 1 had the drive." Staten had the drive, qu ickl y moving up to fourth beh ind Klassen an d Marino. He d ispat ch ed those two withi n a coup le of la ps. and then started to catch Shultz . Staten was only able to move up a little each lap. Shultz was riding Open Pro brilliantly, as if he were after a ride on Staten led the first moto from start Team Maico. Hansen went down hard early in the race and was taken to the hosp ital with a possible broken shoulder and knee injuries.
