Jim Anderson (Suz) had to Rut together a com e-from -behind ride to pu ll off the upset. J eff Cropper (Suz) ha d a super rid e in the first m oto for first p la ce . J An derson b lasted the cou rse in the second moto to get th e first position. Crop per's luck d idn ' t hold in t he second moto as he co uld only mana ge sixth. Anderson took the overall win ';Vhile Rod Casper (Su z) went 3· 2, good eno ugh for second . Dave Therrault (" am ) ga rn ered the third spot. ! ..Mike McCormick (Yam) is getting better and better. He rocketed th e course for consecutive 1·1 m otos. Dave Eakin had d ouble seconds and Jerry Berggren (Ya m) got the thi rd place ho nors. The roar of the O pen bikes go t everyone' s attention as Ra pid Rick Burgett , t he tr a nsit master, shot after a sideways ride int o the first corner. R iding p a st a stubborn R owd y Blasdell (Yam) , Burgett continued to get into shape for the February 18 Toyota Su percr oss event at the Seattle Kingdome. Bu rgett litera lly blasted to a strong 1·1 for the overa ll win . Steve Pless was the rider with the ho nor of sta yin g with Burgett, in the nu mbers at leas t. as he got a 4· 2 for second overall. Dave Eakin (Suz) rode two consistent thirds for tha t number overall. Results in Resul ts Section . a Spence sparkles at Sand Hill Scrambles By Tom Anderson BRENTWO OD , CA , FE B. 3 W ith t he start of the scrambles season , all the top Black P la te riders were out at Sand Hill Ranch Friday night to get the number one p late. The duel for that is between Bla ck P late n umber two Dennis Spence and Da nny Castelhano. O pen Experts had a super race with a fu ll class of 15 hot riders. Spen ce , the winne r two weeks ago, really had to ride. A 20-lap m ain m ade for some real raci ng and long tongues. There was a three way run for first place with dark horse Kirk King trying to get by Spence, and sitting in third plac e was little Dan ny Castelhano, trying to get by King. The excitem ent happened on the 20th lap coming for the ch eckered fla g , wh en Castelhano shot to th e inside of King to finish second wit h King th ird . O pen Jun iors saw the new J un ior rider Ga ry Johnson t ake h is TT Yam a ha to a vict ory over Ro y Fisher. H ar tbau er a nd Underhill had a good duel for third with H a rtb auer win ni ng out. O pen Novice com petition had Bri an Harrison re ally gassin' to stay a head of Art Aorvath . With his wide open slides , Art tried hard but cou ldn 't ta ke th e win away from Harrison. Shawn Cady came down from Sa n Jos e a nd was having a good battle with J oey Schlag until Joey lost h is cha in and left the win to Cady. Wes Morrell took the win awa y from Ga ry Johnson in the 250 cc Junior class again . In the 250 cc Expert main Dennis Spence shot to the lead but coming ou t of th e main straightaway he fell and was left wa y behind the pack. Du a ne Spence now took the lead b ut lost it to J im Filice . Dennis p icked u p h is bike and started to move up on the pack , passing riders at will. He ca ught the leader Filice and passed , taking the lea d a nd the win. The T rop hy Dash was a good race with Kirk King the winner. The 25 0cc N ovi ce ma in was a thriller wit h a th ree way duel for first. J im Morten ha d the lead with Mike Chauncey hot on his rear wheel, while newcomer Chu ck Asland was lurking in th ird. W a itin g for the chance to pass, wh ich came in a m ist ak e aro u nd t he righ t h a n der, Mort en slipped, Ch aunc ey tried to make the pass, but Chuck Aks la nd was the fa st mover a nd p~ssed both riders for the m ain even t wm .
