Cypreu Ave. Burbank, CA 91502 , 213·845·7161 Clark's Branch Motocross, after weeks of rain , turned a bit dusty Sunday as the sun shined and gave all the effects of a spring da y fOT another large turnout of riders and specta tors of motocross. A large class of 125cc Juniors started th e day with two heats of rid ers to decide an A and B d ivision . Steve Hun t , a boa rd a Douglas County Motorsport Yamaha , was t he winner of the first heat after a hassle with Dale Rund and J im Cumpston. Rund later scr a tched after h is Yamaha ate a ring ; and Cumpston was unable to fin ish th e rac e when his Suzuki quit. Speedy Vic Lilya ( Low Cost Cycle KTM) fought his way past Mike Briggs , Mike Zillgitt and John Harvey to win the second heat . A Division was fast as th e track dried out, and Suzuki-mounted Jeff Tunno led the field for six quick laps . He got the white flag , turned the hill , made the downhill jump and in an attempt to square off a berm , something went wrong. Tunno and bi ke went d own in a tumble . He finished th ird behind Lilya and Bru ce Gue rtin . Coming dow n through the gully on t he white lap , Don Anderson's bike went out of control and he took a bad fall . Motornotion's Zillgitt, close behind , tried to miss the rolling bike and went down in the botton . Zillgitt jumped up to assist Anderson , who wasn 't moving , and J ohn Harvey . comi ng up on scattered bikes and bodies, stopped to help. Medic Wayne Dod ge p ronou nced Anderson shaken bu t OK . The second moto made two attempts to start ; one half of the rubber band wouldn't release, the n a rider th rew up his hand at the last min ute . Vic Lilya was in a comfortable lea d at the end of the first lap , then spe nt th e next lap kicking his shifter . He hit something rig ht though and went on to another first. Guertin , with a 2-5 was next and Mike Briggs , at 4-4, ended up thi rd. The B division of 125s was as plagued as the first. Don Nuzum (H on) broke a chain , J erry Thornley left the track with his Suzi stuck in gear and Larry Welch lost his Yamaha in the gull y. Eugen e Anderson finished first with a 1·2. T ed Taylor , new to the track, had a 3- 1 for second and David Schmid, his first time on any track, was th ird with a 2·4 . Douglas County Motorsports came out again , thi s time in the form of Ra ndy Wing, who went 1·1 in the 125cc Expert class . Rod Huffman (Suz) kept in close contact for a 2·2 while David Dense and Rick Smith split for third and fourth . Another new r ider , Mike Middleto n , handled the natural terrain track with ease for a 250cc Exp ert second overall. Middleton , a form er Cal ifornian , ma de a strong attem pt to collect the ever -growing bou n ty at Med for d ' Motocr oss on Motomotion 's La rry (Su pe r) Ho oper. Bu t H ooper remaine d in complete con trol. "Big Y" Yama ha's Da vid Reim er added first place points to his season high point race , bringing him to within a few po ints of leader Rick Yates (Suz) who was t hird for the day.
