Marshall wins "automatically" at Knob Hill D-36 hare scrambles By Bob TomaifTT Productions PESCADERO, CA , JAN . 8 Charlie Marshall, former AMA D-36 number one Blue Plate (motocross), brought his bag of tricks and his 390 Husky Automa tic to Pescadero, and went home with the winner's trophy and some po ints toward a single digit CrossCountry number. Gary Vanderpool, th is year's Cross Country numero uno , took off along side Charlie and when th ey came th rough completing la p one th ey looked like Siames e twins. The two Husky riders blasted through th e m ain check together a nd heade d ou t through the Apple Orcha rd and up a short , rutted hill th at some Novices hadn't made and were still fighting with their balky bikes. From there the course swung south through a grassy meadow (wow) and down a muddy road that turned into a half-mile downhill sweepe r (you wait a whole lap for places like that) j ust Defore the first check . Yamaha's Six-Day rider Chris Caner was running third but having chain problems in the mud. He made it past check two , through " the woods" with a neat section of virgin trail, up "the highway" (with another n ice sweeper to th e right , feet up and fourth gear) and down through a rolIer coaster trail with right and left benned turns that dropped you down two short, but eye opening hills int o the "Creek trail". It was ther e tha t Carter's uncooperative chain locked up and threw him off. Getting up with a bloody nose and out of the running, he limped back to the pits, helping some of the less experienc ed up a tri cky hill with a spring on it and go t one rider out that was off the course and in the bushes . Chris is one of the reasons I still ca lI this Sportsman racing. Ageless Greg T ulIer took advantage of Caner's bad luck and was blazing along in third ahead of felIow Cycle Center rider Scott Austi n. The two Ma ico riders finish ed in th at order, ahead of Steve Marsh (Hus) and Eddie Diaz (Yam) . Eddie put in a good ride (his first as an Expen) to beat ou t 'Bru ce KelIy (Hus) and Len Perham (KT M). In other Open class racing Bob Tornia (oh , I love to see that name in Cycle News ) Bul-dogged his way around to win the Junior class ahead of Jim Moyles (Hon) and Santa Cruz Ace Charlie Longmire (Suz). The Open Novices put on a sho:w once th ey ~ot past a first-hill bottleneck W John Welch (Yam ) Ith getting the holeshot only to be passed by a flying T im Werder (Yam) , the only Novice that did five laps . Jimmy Moore (Bul) took third in front of a home town crowd while Bob Davis (Yam) thumped his 500 home to beat first ·time -out -but-fast Roland Chaloux (IT 400 ). Don Cameron (H us) and Alla n Kallennan (Yam) rounded out the big bore winners. Dave Mo rgan (Hus) showed his "Expertise " in the 250cc class with a - convincing win . Ray Hinson (Yam), who seems to get faste r as he gets older, took second ahead of Dave Bertram (Hus), Up and coming Duke DowelI (Suz) was theJ unior winner. The 250cc No vice class went to Cruisin' J im Cushing (Hus) who never looked back, with a very inspired Jim Hubbard taking second his very first race on his Yamaha IT 250. Mike Dempsey (Hus) 'beat Matt Valbusa (Suz) and Steve Perham (KT M) for show placing. While his Dad Bill was chasing Old Timer winner Ned Ma randino (Mai) around, young Tom Best (Suz) was tak ing another 125cc class win .over Tom Jepson (Hon) and Paul Annada. Veteran Bill Aust in (Mai) won the Veteran's class with Duane Datson (Yam) second and Dan Secrest (Yam) third. Chuck BulIwinkie came from Susanville (about a five-hour drive l) to
