Put-Put Peter pebflies Philistines in OTHG prelude By Jello Joe Phillips SANTA MARIA , CA , JAN. 8 Armed with 1978 numbers and many new members, the geriatric rac ing set known as the Over The H ill Ga ng (North) gathered resolutely to work off their holiday excesses during the scheduled Pro Conditioning day of thre e motos . After viewing their condition and no doubt fearing coronaries, Spillway Park owner Gallo Gene discreetl y op ted for two motos only. In moto one Amateur Kaptin Kirk pulled the hol eshot , but all eyes were on new Expert Put-Pu t Peter, a swift , burly engineer fr om Michigan wh o had t he younger Ex pe rt s on the sidelines nodding . Ma n iac Mike , withou t his KTM a nd nursing a very tired '73 H onda borrowed fr om Dorky Dave, had it wound to th e stops trying to keep up with Pu t -Put but blew th e spark plug right out of th e he a d : Phil th y Ph il a nd Cheap Chuck had thei r usual d ogfight (t hi s tim e continued into th e pits over a disputed "line" ) to th e checke red for second and th ird Expert. Kaptin Kirk had come in right behind Expert Put-Put for first Amateur, with Driller Dal e. newcomer Pucker Paul . and Dorky Dave finishing behind him in that order, also beating severa l Experts. Jumbo Jim , who usually wins or finis hes high in the Amateurs , gasped in and allowed as how his 12 pounds of extra Christmas baggage had "waisted" him . The second wave saw several Intermediates , who lose sleep dreaming of poor starts behind Novices who shut off in the corners and clog up th e lines, realize their nightmares . Without warning, the starter flagged off the group leav ing Intermediate Dung Dennis , a mong others, with their weapons in neutral wh ile wa iting for the usua l rubbe rband start . In te r m ed ia t e Come-on Chuck converged on Nov ice J ello J oe for the holeshot and pulled aw ay f rom the scra mb led p ack , conte ndi ng only with nemesis Am orous AI, swapping the lead severa l tim es before Come-on took the win. In h is first ra ce as an Interm ed ia te , J owls J im held on for third . than ks to G ru mpy George wh o ha d earlie r di agnosed his a iling Husky as having points prob lems. Buffal o Bill had blitzed most of the Int ermed ia tes for the N ovice win , as new Novice Giddyup Ga ry and T ired T ed got by a fa d ing J ell o Joe for second and th ird . On the lin e for the second moto the ga ng had reason to cheer the decision for two rnotos: the track was deep ly rutted a nd slick in spots, with fou rfoot -deep mudholes for th e ca re less. The combined Experts and Am at eu rs a r rive d e n masse at the co r ne r, eve ryo ne surviving n ea r -coll isions excep t Amateur Driller Dal e wh o wen t down after tangling with'Cheap Chuck Expert. His screams regarding Chea p's ancestry were later sa id to be heard clearly over the din as the second wa ve sto red in to the corner, Expert Put-Put Peter again lapped most of the field , proving his first rnoto win was no fluke as he breezed in for the Expert overall. Mania c Mike somehow assaulted his feeble Honda in for second, with Philthy Phil dogging him for third , good enough for second for the day. Cheap Chuck knowing that no thing berserks an Amateur like having Experts behind him , recovered enough to take th ird for the ra ce , but Maniac's finish gave him third Expert overall. New Amateur Pucker Paul outran Kaptin Kirk for the win , but ~aptin's second gave him the overall. Dorky Dave's charge netted him third overall behind Pucker , as Driller Dale's earlier high finish went for naught despite his hard run through the pack. When the second wave was flagged off, a more alert Intermediate Dung Dennis had his front wheel alig ned with Amorous AI's rear as Amorous richocheted hard off the first turn berm , dumping Dung into th e pa ck of charg ing N ovices who unceremoniousl y used th e last yea r's high point Int ermediate as traction . C ome -on Chu ck foll owed his mousta ch e in for wh at is gettin g to b e a ro u tine win , giggling over his 450 Ma ico's pull over Am or ou s AI's 250 Suzuki on t he st r aights . New Intermediate De composed Dan took third overall behind Am or ou s. Novice Buffalo Bill again ran away wit h the win , agai n bea ting fou r Intermediat es, with Giddyup Ga ry and Tired T ed repeating their ea rl ier scramb le, for second and thi rd overa ll. H igh points for th e d ay went to Novice Bermsh ot Be rn ie . the ge nial Ca l Poly "professor , for not finis hi ng last for the first timel Next ra ce at Spillw a y, Jan . 22 .
