Myerscough, Staten and 8reker take DeAnza 's first $1.000 MX By Ron Lawson SUNNYMEAD. CA.JAN. 2 Ed Michetti , who recently split off from the California Racing Club, started the new year rolling for the all new DeAnza Racing 18 Club by offering the park's first -ever $1000 purse. Many talented Pros and sportsmen alike came out and even the weather cleared up for the event. In the I25cc Pro class , the man -to watch was Brian Myerscough, armed with one of the first '78 "C " Suzukis in California. The start of moto one saw Pat Hubbs shoot into the lead with CH rider Lenny Giger (Suz) right behind. On the first lap Myerscough moved past Giger into second and then set after Hubbs. Back in fourth place , Gary Scheidler (Yam) was working hard to hold off both Marty Miller (Xup Inc.-Suz) and Ron Turner. who were pushing hard. Turner moved like a guided missile and by the third lap got past Miller and Scheidler. On the very same lap. Myerscough put his R&D mount into the lead. From that point on, Myerscough did nothing but stretch his lead. Hubbs had a solid hold on second with Giger trailing in third. Late in the race Turner caught .... . .~---------------------------------------- and passed Giger . Myerscough cruised across the finish line with a healthy lead. Moto two belonged to Myerscough from start to finish . Second place, however. had an exciting race between Turner and Giger. As they scrambled to keep up with the disappearing leader, the two were rid ing bar to bar. Turner broke free after Giger began to tire . Hubbs ran into trouble in round two. On lap three he was hard at work making up for a bad start when he fell . He remounted, but the best he could do was sixth. Denton. adjusting to his new ride . scored a fourth in the last moto . In the overall standings. Myerscough took top money followed by Turner. Giger, and Hubbs. Dr ew Nelson rounded out the top five. The 250cc Pro class was yet another win for Goat Breker. Round one saw Tracy Oswell (Mid -Vall ey KTM) get the hol eshot and lead for the first five laps. Then Dave Taylor (DG Suz) led for a couple of laps . Breker then put his Dura -Lube Husky in the lead and stayed there. Ron Turner (FMF-Suz) worked his way up to finish second. Jeff Jennings (Suz) ran into difficulties in rnoto one but the second time around he grabbed the holeshot. He led for three laps before Breker took the top spot once more. Jennings remained in second . battling with .Cro wn Cycle's Mark Law rence (Ya m ). Mid-way in the race, Lawrence passed Jennings and held him off all the way to the finish. Overall. it was Breker on top of Lawrence , and Jim Gibson went 5-5 on his Bassett Yamaha for third . Jeff Clark went wild in the second 250cc Intermediate moto at SSM's Sp ortsm an day, only to lose the lead on the last lap. R ex Staten , al so on a Bassett Yamaha , went home with the bigges t chunk of the Open Pro cash . Throughout his first ra ce , ho wever , Staten was locked in co m b at with Br ek er. Br ek er wa s sm oo th but cou ld n't m anage to find a flaw in Staten 's style . In t he course of th eir battle, the two slowly ope ned a g ap on third -place Kenn y Za h rt , Zahrt , mounted on th e same Bul th at he raced the Fl or ida se ries with , was be ing flat ou t -powered . As th e ra ce came int o its final laps. Breker made his move on Staten, but less than a lap later. Staten took the lead right back. Breker didn't get a second ch a nce when the big Husky threw a rod on the very next lap . This gav e Staten an easy victory ahead of Zahrt , Bob Marino (Yam) and Dave Williams (Mai). In the Second rnoto, Staten had a little competition from Zahrt in the first half of the race . but in the last laps the Bultaco rider slacked off, apparently happy with second . The money went to Staten , Zahrt , Williams, Steve Rawson (Mid -Valley KTM) and Val Tamietti (Mai). Results in Results Section. V.O. T.E. hosts tinsel trapster tourney By Cosgro ve Gil more WESTERN MOJAVIA , CA . DEC . 18 The Valley Observed Trials Enthusiasts (V.O .T.E .) trials club tossed a mistletoe and tinsel trapster tourney and drew a surprising number of derelicts ducking Christmas shopping. Such was the drawing power of th e event that a couple of Ohio riders showed up to view the traction action . Club star Bernie Schreiber was absent . preparing himself on the ski slopes for th e upcoming world observed trials ca lend a r that kicks off in February. David Ige , less than a yea r off a TY80 , topped th e Amateurs while Mark Bernbaum headed the Novices. Bob Miller was best Beginner and Sue Fish (not th e motocrosser) was top Woman . Results in Resul ts Section. Rice triumphant at 'Old Timers Toys for Tots GPrace By Betty Bird , ORANGE. CA , DEC . 4 The Old T imers MX Assn . was among the largest of the groups that did battle a t the AMA D-37 Toys for Tots Grand Prix promoted by the Maywood M ,C . J ohn Ric e led th e Masters class through th e uphill-d ownhill cou rse in fin e fashion for the win . Vice President Doug Archibald took second overa ll. Basil Sanchez took cha rge of the Exp ert war games , winning over Dick Mosel y and Sam Jones. Chuck Wood y g r a b be d the Amateur cla ss. beatin g Bill Lyons and Randy Lyall. The Novice class tou chdown went to Don J ens en. Wayne Powell and Robert Beasl ey completed th e top th ree . It was all fun and games for th e Old Timers who know what it 's like to have a toy and want th e real kids to have some too. Resul ts in Resul ts Section. Elbert, Nelson nail SSM Sportsman Special By Ron Lawson ORANGE, CA . DEC. 17 It's no secret that some of the best racing is found in the Intermediate , Junior and Beginner classes. The sportsmen are com monly neglected in favor of the big money Pro races at many Southern California race tracks. Realizing the lack of attention given to these riders. the promoters of Saddleback Saturday Motocross decided to g ive the sportsmen their own day of racing. The id ea appealed to Fulton Tidwell . who is the manager of Arrow Chevrolet in Los Angeles as well as a motocross enthusiast . and he arranged to give gift certi fica tes worth from $10
