Sparks smokes at AMEMX By Lee Taylor Sliding around the turns and in for the checkered flag Sterner was just inches away from Kelley and in true Sterner fashion , revved his Odyssey all the way and managed to slip by in time for the win . Kelley took second overall . Results in Results Section. BAKERSFIELD, CA , DEC. 18 Curtis Sparks held a pair of aces to take the overall victory in the ATC 90 class at American Motocross Enterprises (AME) motocross held at Sprockets Park. Sparks fired off the line at the start of the first moto and held command throughout with some hot ammunition on his tail by the names of Carl Foster and Stan Davis. These two had Danny Shaffer moving up fast behind them and pushing his ATC to its limit. A heavy duel for second continued as Foster, Davis and Shaffer took on King Kong Jump three abreast. As the checkered flag waved them home, Sparks took down the moto 'win with Foster holding onto second and Davis strong in third. The second time around, Sparks once more jumped into the lead with Shaffer, riding for Kern Backhoe Service, right on his tail. Shaffer finally made his bid and slid int o th e lead. Davis bopped his way into th ird as Sparks shot back into the lead. Sparks bounced across in the lead with Foster ending up with the second . overall and third overall going to Shaffer. Carl Sterner ra cked up back to back wins for the Odysseys after a muddy and grueling race aga inst Butch Kelley and Terry McCurds. All through the first moto , Sterner had McCurds challenging hard . Sterner held on and kept McCurds back in second. The second time they rolled off the line, Sterner had the lead but he also had Kelley dosing fast, rocking and weaving his way up alongside. It was really a Sterner-Kelley battle as these two took on the jumps side by side. banging and bouncing their way around the track. Heading into the hairpin turn, Kelley went deep into the inside , getting by at last and holding his lead by a narrow margin. The Mazzacane sisters of North got things off to a winning start with a first and a second in the Women's Division. Toni led the girls home in the first moto with Michelle Wemple of Hemet in second and another North rider Karen Bergkuist in third . Lisa Mazzacane cam e back strong the second moto to take the win with sister Toni second and Michelle third . The overall went to Toni with Lisa getting the second in a tiebreaker with Michelle. Toby Ma ynard carried the North banner in the 175cc Novice class , collecting 20 points as he posted two wins over Robert Roblers of Palm Springs and Ross Adame, a North teammate . Scott Wilkinson was the workhorse for North as he claimed bo th the 250cc Senior and the Open Senior Divisions. The 250cc Senior was a clean sweep for the North machine as Roger Paddock and David Fo ley picked up the two , three spots. The Open turned out the same way when Wilkinson's teammates Paddock and Willie Murray were content to follow him home.
