Windham was really pressuring Burna, trying every trick of the trade to reverse the order of the finish, but Vince was victorious and Windham was second. Yamaha mounted Daniels was third. The final moto went again to Burna after a rip -roa ri n' race with Windham. Again lap one it was wheel to wheel but Burna collected the trophy and his first Amateur win. Steve Fortune was the man about town in the Special Expert class . Don Meiner pulled the holeshot on Mike Montgomery's old 500 Yamaha that he sold to Don . Burna was hanging on to second until there came the Experts and there went the Amateurs. It took Fortune four laps to get the lead but he wrestled his big 750 Yamaha over the jump and into the lead a wheel ahead of Windham. In moto two Burna pulled the holeshot (the Amateurs started ahead of the Experts) . Fortune was in front of Burna by the second lap. Vince was really pouring it on and hanging in there with the Experts . Joel Windham had his hands full with the first time Amateur and Vince held him off till the white flag lap when Windham realized it was the last chance and turned on his Yamaha to snatch second from Burna. In the final moto Fortune got blasted by Windham. Joel was tired of eating Steve's dust and he got the jump on the start and was bound and determined to get this win . Steve was really , pushing to get Joel but Windham held on and took the checkered. The overall win was still Steve's and Windham was second with Burna third overall. Results in Results Section. Norco,wows opposition in Corona HSMX By Elaine Jones CORONA. CA. DEC. 10 Norco has put together another impressive high school motocross team that is not only strong as far as number of riders but with 22 class balance. They proved that point without a doubt when the results came out and Norco had only two classes where they didn't have a rider in the top three. They started things off early as Jim Stevens and Mike Word took command of the Mini Novice and Senior divisions respectively. With a good pad on the points going for them , Leslie Word went to work 'in the hard fought Women 's Division, winning the first rnoto over Michelle Wemple and Moana Roberts of Hemet. In the second rnoto Dana Sinsley of Norco jumped out to a commanding lead with Moana in second and Leslie third. On the fourth lap Moana ran into trouble th at dropped her down and a nd it wasn 't long after that Leslie fel t the bite of th e fickle fing er of fat e. Dana was still cooking up front and brought it home for Norco but a DNF in the first m oto d rop ped her out of contention. The win wen t to Mich elle with Leslie second and Moana th ird. Danny Curtis got Norco back on top, picking up the win in the 100cc Novice Class . It took him two laps to catch Danny Lawrence of Upland and put himself behind teammate Scott Morris. Two laps later Morris was out with problems and it was clear sailing for Curtis. In the second mota Morris more than made up for his loss as he immediately got to 'the front and stayed there. Curtis hung in there and capitalized on everyone else's bad luck and came up second. It was more that enough for first overall with Lawrence getting second and Andy Deathridge of Hemet third . Bill Jewett of Norco and Doug Lincoln of Colton battled it out in the hotly contested 125cc Senior Division. Lincoln led the first moto from wire to wire with Jewett riding double the , whole way. In the second go it was jewett's turn to lead with Lincoln in the follow the leader role . It ended in a tie with Jewett gettingthe win with his higher place finish the final mota. It was a clean sweep for Norco in the 175cc _ Intermediate with Rick McCorkell leading the way ' with two straight. David Neal was second arid Robert Jeralds third. The final win of a very winning day . for Norco came in the 500cc Novices. Again a Norco rider gave an outstanding performance in the first mota only to have problems in the second. Dave Sloane had the race in his hip pocket the first round leading it wire to wire with Mark Morris also of Norco behind him. Sloane had everything going in just the same manner in the second mota only to break down with two laps to go . Morris picked up the ball and carried it for the touchdown with Rich Ebarra of Colton second and Sloane a disappointed third . Results in Results Section. Chris Morey flew to wins in the USMRA Expert and Pro classes. Kepharts strike at D·38 desert race By Loretta Pipkin IMPERIAL , CA, DEC. 4 Eighteen-year-old Ron Kephart topped the field in El Cajon Motor Cycle Club's gO-mile desert race held west of Imperial. Kephart, aboard a 250 Suzuki, was 30 seconds off John McDaniel at the end of the first 45 miles . Passing him in the pits, Kephart widened his lead to five minutes by the checkered flag. McDaniel, plagued by minor breaks the last three races, succumbed to a broken throttle cable in the second round. Charlie Welk , on a borrowed bike, joined the 125 ranks this trip and pulled a second overall for his efforts. After being out most of the season, Dan Dibb got third spot. Open Amateur Joe Clymore copped fourth with l S-year-old 125 Expert Steve Kephart romping in for fifth. Ce cil Hollenbeck, Bob Martin and Gary Pendelton were one, two . and three in the Senior class . Cruising around the pits, it was a Kephart family day. Jubilation was theirs since Ron got his first overall win with little brother Steve's first finish in the top five. Righteous desert racing folks. Results in Results Section. Morey wins USMRA Christmas Special ' By Carol Campbell ELSINORE, CA, DEC. 11 The U.S. Minicycle Racing Association , hosted its first annual Christmas Special with about 200 riders in attendance. Plagued by dense fog. the races were delayed for almost two hours, but no one seemed to mind. Chris Morey (SUI) got the holeshot in the first moto of the 83cc Modified Expert class with Mark Meredith (SUI) in close pursuit. Rick Jackson (SUI) was running a close third. Morey held the lead for the first two laps while Meredith and Jackson TIm Shelton heads up Kenny Campbell in USMRA Intermediate action. battled for second . Eric Baker, running a. solid fourth , was just waiting to make his move and he got his opportunity when Jackson decided to check for soil samples coming down the steep downhill . Meanwhile, Morey ' and Meredith were still at it. Meredith made his move in the back section and took Morey for the win in the first mota . The second mota, Morey was out in front again with Meredith right behind, but this time Morey kept his wheels to the ground and never looked back, giving Meredith no chance to get by. Morey finished with a 2: 1 to take first overall and Meredith finished with a 1-2 for second with Robbie Nolin taking third. The 12 and over Intermediate 083cc Modified class proved interesting. Mike Bennett got off the line first with Sean Gilboy in second but the race was further back in the pack for third. fourth and fifth place positions. Scott Brown, running third . had his worries with Tim Shelton ' and Kenny Campbell (SUI) right behind. Campbell made his move on the uphill jump and passed Shelton (SUI). Campbell did his best to get around Brown but Brown (SUI) wanted no part of th a t. When the checkered flag dropped , it was Bennett (1·1) who took first overall , and Brown (3 ·2) was second and Campbell finished with a 4-4 for third overall. Rudy Dickinson (SUI). one of the youngest factory sponsored riders and Larry Brooks did some great bike to bike combat in the 9·11 Intermediate class. Dickinson got the holeshot but Brooks (Yam) was breathing down his neck throughout the whole race until Brooks lost control in the Svturns , giving Dickinson some breathing room. Dickinson finished with a I-I and Brooks a 2-2. The riders were beginning to think Christmas had come early to Elsinore Raceway. Periodically. as a race would finish, a rider would be picked at random and given a new tire. Two boys made their parents happy by winning a three-day trip to Las Vegas. Danny Jones won a ladies Timex watch for his Mom and all trophy winners had their choice of an impact wrench, set of screwdrivers. steak knives or a cutlery set, plus they all received a U.S. Minicycle Racing Associatioin tee-shirt. Fog or no fog it seems that a good time was had by all. Results in Results Section.
