Taylor held down second with Zahrt rushing up behind him. Zahrt made his pass over the dropoff and pushed Nicol relentlessly , wheel to wheel through the sandwash, where Zahrt finally made it by . Don Dixon (YamDixon Plating) moved into fourth and had a fight with Taylor who was third. Getting by Dixon and then Taylor. Cole was now just inches behind Nicol. Cole finally slipped a wheel under Nicol but going down into the sandwash , loop Nicol grabbed second back again . Heavy dieing between these two continued down to the end with Nicol holding Cole off in third. Zahrt took tap money for the class, Nicol was second overall and third went to Cole. Bob by Jones racked up back-toback wins in the 125cc Pros. Jones too k command off the line in the first mota as a d uel for second took place between Chip Johnson and Tim Locey (Suz -DG). In his first Pro race, Mike Gosselaar (Yam -Van Nuys Cycle) was holding onto fourth . Johnson grabbed the lead away from Jones and a super tight race developed with barely inc hes separating Johnson, Jones and Locey. Jones made his bid for the lead and both he and Locey made their way by J o h n so n . Gary Scheidler (YamBushwacker) was now in third and keeping the pressure on Locey. A lot of changes took place for third place as L arry Watkins, moving up fast , took over. At the end of the moto, Jones held command with Locey in second holding off Watkins. The second time out. Jones once more took over. setting up a superb lead. A duel for second took place between John O'Mara (Suz -AI Baker). Johnson and Locey. All three riders were right on top of each other and closing fast on J ones. Johnson in trouble. had to pull off the track as O 'Mara and Locey·went out to ca tc h Jones. The O ' M a r a / L o c ey duel continued right down to the last count wit h Locey getting by O'Mara a nd hou nd in g Jones to the finis h flag. Jones held strong for t he overall win , Locey was right there for second overall and th ird went to O'Mara. Results in Results Section. Tracy Oswell leads the DeAnza 250cc Pros ou t of t he f irst turn. Tracy Oswell (KTM) took the 250cc Pro class , although Dave Eropkin and his White Brothers Yamaha didn't make it easy. Oswell led most of the first moto, but Eropkin got by on the 10th lap and took the win . In the second mota , Eropkin's bike came to a sudden halt on a uphill section, allowing Oswell to go in for an uncontested win. Eropkin managed to finish the race in sixth, but that was only good enough for third place money behind Bob Haag (C-A). The 250cc Beginner class was taken by Joe Pena on a brand new Montesa. Joe just turned 54 years old. and is well into his second decade of racing. Trailing in second and third were Ken Reeves and Tim Dra ke . Results in Resu lts Section. Zahrt, Jones top AMEXmasMX By Lee Taylor VALENCIA, CA, DEC . I I American Mot ocross Enterprises (AME) heralded in the Christmas season with a real live Sa nta "Moto" Claus riding t he 250cc Junior race plus scores of Christmas goodies donated as contingency prizes. Among them , Mikuni Carbs, Scott goggles, Spectre Oil , PJ-I and WD 40. In addition, Electro donated four helmets for a special drawing. Ken Zahrt (Bul) took home his first Christmas p resent by winning the 250cc Pro race after a hot and heavy race with prime competitors Doug Nicol and Eddie Cole. Nicol grabbed the holeshot at the start of the first mot o as Za hrt battled Rick Guilmette (Suz-Aircone) for second. Ba ttling side by side, Za h rt finally took over alo ng the sandwash. Dea n Taylor moved into fourth , then set out after Guilmette. In a flash . he p assed Guilmette and was out to catch Za hrt . Zahrt went down in the hairpin turn but re-mounted before Taylor could make his move. Moving up fast, Co le was now in fou rth a nd p utting heavy p ressure on Taylor. T hey ba nged wheels all over the course Defore Taylor finally ha d to relinquish his position. Coming in for the checkered flag. Nic ol still held a be autiful lea d as Zahrt fought off Cole and Taylor right down to the wire. The second time around , Guilmette took the holeshot with Nicol right on top of him . Guilmett e pulled off the Lawson doubles at Corona "attrack By Elaine Jones CORONA, CA , DEC . 7 The Corona Raceway half mile track was primo and. with the talent on hand, the possibility of a new track record was not beyond the realm of probability. If it was goi ng to ha ppen it would come in either the Open Expert or the Money race. The Ope n Experts saw Eddie Lawson come off the line like he was shot out of a cannon. Dylan Neihart. ge tting used to his big bike, was a close second and Wa yne Rainey. b rea king in his new Shell Yamaha , was third. The race be longed to Lawson as he got the big Harley motating and came close to his own record of 22.24 seconds with a clocking of 22 .77 . Neihart a nd Ra iney h ad a good battle for second going with Neihart doing some good defensive riding that kept R a iney a t bay. The Money class was full of talent wit h Laws on. Don Grigsby.
