~ ~ (Left) Nevada winner Scot Harden (drinking) and runner-up Jack Johnson at the finish. (Above) Fifth overall Jeff Nickells. mounted Harry Keast lost only one point, which had the other riders shaking their heads in admiration. Harry is eligible for District 37 Senior class even though he has been riding the 250cc class. Hang in there over·40 guysl Harry is living proof that you can be competitive for many years. The story for -the Numero Uno was Sam Orrick (Suz), two minutes late. Sam just missed being three minutes late at the tiebreaker as he was 57 seconds late into his second minute. That three seconds was the difference as his competition in the form of TT-500mounted Larry Woodruff was just a few seconds slower and dropped three points. It looks like Sam will carry the Number One plate next year with Woodruff second. It's been nip and tuck between the two for the last three or four enduros. CRC is looking to put together a better check crew organization next year to. alleviate the problems they ran into this year. Interested parties are urged to contact Jerry McNeal at CRC. Results 1. Harden hustles at Nevada ChampionshipH&H Orrick takes CRC number one at Santa Claus enduro By Enduro Claus ANDERSON DRY LAKE, CA, DEC. 11 Twas the week before Christmas and not a creature was stirring except for 800 Santa Claus Enduro riders, Jerry McNeal and a whole 14 bunch of check elves ready to put their little mark on the timecards. Santa put in a surprise visit at the finish and handed out candy to go with very nice 100 % finisher trophies to all. Santa arrived on a TT-500 with the • explanation that the . reindeer were being rested for an upcoming mission. The Santa Claus Enduro is traditionally California Racing Club's easiest enduro ofthe year, but with the number one place up for grabs in all divisions, CRC threw in a fast section on the second loop to separate the scores . The first loop was easy but dusty which unfortunately the case these days uritil winter rains and snow hit. All contenders for the big One zeroed the first loop including mini number one and two , Chris Gables (Yam) and T .D . Swets (Suz) . One of these two will end up number one mini for the year when the final points are tabulated . The Women's Division went right down to the wire when Terri Rubidoux (Suz) and Sharon Willoughby (Yam) both zeroed the tiebreaker. Sharon felt Terri would end up the number one Woman by 30 points or so, again unofficial until the tabulations. The big guys had the second loop to contend with and it was fairly easy except for the fast section. A 36 mph average with a check -in to make sure no one gambled had most riders at least two minutes late , except one. Honda - By Skip Johnson LAS VEGAS , NV , DEC . 11 Returning to his home ground, recent Baja 1000 overall winner Scot Harden, aboard his Husqvarna 390. garnered the overall laurels in the hotly contested Nevada . State Championship Hare 'n Hound put on by the Silver City Scramblers. The action started at the drop of the banner in this year's Motorcycle Racing Association of Nevada (MRAN) finale, as pre race favorite Leroy Kyger .(400 Yamaha) exploded into an early, unfortunately short lived lead , as he also "exploded " his rear tire and retired before reaching the BLM · imposed flashing red light, in lieu of the familiar smokebomb. The first to the " flashin" was Harden , literally getting his rear knobbies rubbed off by "J um pin" Jack Johnson's front tire! Wow! Half mile action in the desert! Their ' battle's blazing intensity quickly put plenty of distance between - them and the rest of the racers. Harden slimly led Johnson' to the first road crossing (approximately 30 miles into the race) and held the lead into the pits where, now get this, Johnson informed Harden he had a rear flat, offered his spare tire to Harden, chatted with him until he was ready to go, and then the race was on againl This time Johnson held the narrow lead on the final loop until apparent shoulder pain caused him to ease his pace slightly. Slightly was all Harden needed. He motored by a few miles from the finish with Johnson less than 30 seconds behind. The hare 'n hound was not the only race going on as this year's hectic bidding for the 250cc number one plate climaxed as current number one rider Mike Maze, on a brand new Husqvarna 250 blasted his way to third overall, first 250 after a heavy, framebending endo near the finish. All apparent and not so apparent injuries were treated by Southern Nevada First Aid and Rescue squad, Nevada's answer to Rescue 3. As the saying goes, winning the battle doesn't always win the war . Maze relinquished his number one plate to second-place 250 finisher Fred Hansen Jr. (Yam), and third-place finisher Marc Knudsen (250 KTM) will have to settle for number two next year. Other class action saw Danny Winebarger (Yam) smoke the 125cc Experts followed by next year's number one 125cc rider Kevin Davis (KTM). The overall Amateur winner was the very capable Benny Ramos (250 Yam) . He was able to snatch the lead from Manny Iverson (370 Suz) just miles from the checkered. The majority of Nevada's Novices have some excuses to make after they were blitzed by the youngest riders in the event (13 years old!) Greg Price (100 Yam) took the overall Novice .win , making him an Amateur for 1978. He was closely followed by Daryl Folks (125 Suz) , first 125cc Novice. Folks' father Casey Folks (250 Expert), Las Vegas 400 promoter, was - su pposed ly overheard telling his son that he "let him" beat him and he should have more respect for his eldersl Most of the riders rated this one as a typical Scrambler su per event and an enjoyable finish to this year's racing. • Results .
