N ish stayed right on Walsh's tail through every tum and jump trying to make a pass, but Walsh rode a perfect race down to th e wire. In th e wh ite flag lap , it appeared Nish was a bo u t to overtak e Walsh, then mishifted as he reached his sid e. In a last attempt , as th ey rounded th e towe r turn , Nish sho t to the inside .and went down in the soft dirt, lea ving Wash a clear win. Oddly enough , the sam e ac tion too k place in th e 83cc Modified 9·11 class between Gary Szilagyi and Paul Sm ith . Sm ith was try ing to take first fro m Szilagyi . . Despi te Smi th 's co ns t a nt effort . Szilagyi had the power ou t of the turns. Sm ith, in his last attem p t. went down in the last lap . exactly wher e Nish bitit in th e previou s class . NOV . 13 The PVDR's annual Turkey Shoot was a good family enduro with plenty of staff at the checks and a well laid out course. Key time was at 7:00 a.m. wh ich see med ea rly when you awak en ed at daybrea k but as th e riders had 93 mil es over three loops to go , you realized wh y the ungodly hour was necessary. First loop was rela tively sim p le a nd could be called m a in ly a time keeping course . It had sand enough to cha lle nge t h e mi n is and less experienced rider. The second loop went immediately in to rocks a n d rock ca ny ons with b ottle n ecks . It d efi n itely made the novice two -loop rider wish he had ch osen a d iffer ent ra ce to take on th e secon d loop . The ext re me ly ro ck y course sta r te d to sep a r a te the experienced from th e beginners . Af ter soft sand hills a nd th en a super rock hill that gave many riders trouble , it was a welcome relief to fifth -gear it to the fini sh. Third loop gave way to miles a nd miles of canyons a nd who op-d ee-des. many of th em waist high and made by over -ra cin g an ar~a . Then th ey took t he riders up a gi ga ntic , bo u lder stre wn m ountain that ga ve everyone t rou b le, since bodies were ge tting pretty tired by now . Gen uine reli ef was the feeling as th e fin ish lin e came into sigh t. Possibly a be tter syste m of designating sta rting lines co u ld ha ve saved many ride rs some .last m inute confusio n and less flats due to roc ks. that h ad to be cha nged betw een loo ps , is all we can say marred this weatherperfect desert weekend. The Turkey Shoot definitely qualifies as a good family endu ro . CRC Roadrunner Enduro By larry l angley CHARLIE'S WAGON WHEEL CAFE. CA . NOV . 13 The United Enduro Assn. (UEA) clu b team composed of Sa m Orrick (Suz), Bruce Kessler (Oss), Terry Swets (Hon) , Jerry Counts (Hon) and your corres pondent (Hon) edg ed ou t a strong Checkpoints M.C . tea m led by Husky m ounted T om Spurlock to win the CRC Five Man Club Tea m Champio nsh ip . T he margi n of victory was just one point. CRC offe re d huge trophies in th ree Shop . and c a te go ri es: Club , Manufacturer. The Shop T rophy wass won by Chet Rector, Joh n Sch roeder . Bill Sm ith. Al Nou ri an and Frank Poll ard representing W hi te Bros. T he Manufac turer Trophy was won by th e Husky team of J im a nd B.]. Ol son , Bob and Mark Ashl ock a n d Dick Thomas . Olson and Ashlock were father/son. First loop was more interesti ng and a bit faster than typ ical CRC first loops. H ighlight of th e loop was a short trip through a m ine tunnel wh ich featured a 90 degree turn in the m iddle. Riders with wide ha nd lebars found themselves stuck in th e narrow tunnel for a short tim e . A few riders had to bypass the treat when the tunnel jammed up . The next section found a lot of riders la te. but the course cam e out on a fast fireroad and most were able to get back on tim e before the tie -breaker check . Two contenders for the Women's Number One plate zeroed the check. Terri Rubidoux (Suz ) and Sharon Willouby (Yam) . Min i rider T .D. Swets (Su z) also zeroed it. Dust was the only p roblem . Second loo p led righ t off into some very nice , fast , cha llengi ng terrain at a bris k 24 mph. Then the course led across Teagle Wash int o the fu n hill s on the other side. Up a whoop-dee-d o ca ny o n and then a c h oice : hard wa y/ ea sy wa y. The hard way led right up a steep sa nd hill whi le th e easy way went around the comer out of sight The hard way was certainly that and m any a rider ended up taking th e easy way after fail ing to make th e hill. . A chec k after the speed ave ra ge changed to a fast 30 mph led rid ers int o the sec tion wh ich de cid ed the end uro: Fast and tight for three m iles until th e next check found everyone late. The fast riders h it it a minute late. Two minutes late was pretty good . with three about th e average. It was a tiebreaker for good measure. Fishback "oods SRA Riverside Grand Prix By Sue Senn RI VERSIDE, CA , NOV . 12 & 13 The 25 minis that roared off the line Saturday morning became the first event for the last SRA Grand Prix of 1977 . It. was Kelly Moore and Kevin Senn side by side. At the end of th e secon d ' lap the pair had a two minute edge over the pack being led by James Lu cero. This edge proved to be quite an advan tage for Senn wh en his rear brak e went out. He still took second be hin d Moore . Bill Rod en. a profession al hockey p la yer fro m the Ne w Yor k Isla nders rode the 250 ra ce in his first grand prix. In fact , this was his first tim e on a motorcycle .
