CA 94 0 15 (4 15) 755-8761 i / Breker took command of the lead just before the second turn and never relinquished it. While Breker was motoring ' away , t he process of jockeying for first lap position was going on back in the back. First bike down the sandwash was Breker with a bit of a lead -over Phil Stumbo (400 KTM) and Bill Tarling (250 KTM). Bryan Bennett (400 KTM) came fourth with three small bores , Kenny Upp (125 Yam) , Craig Lee (125 Suz) and Tim Plant (175 DMG) following right behind. During the second la p Tarling got by Stumbo and Upp maneuvered beyond Bennett , who either evaporated or had a mishap of some kind . Then the real battle of the race began. Stumbo pasted Tarling and led for awhile, then Tarling got by Stumbo and led again. About the only thing Tarling and Stumbo didn't do was swap bikes at speed. The two desert aces kept at it hammer and tongs until Tarling got off in a sandy turn of whoops. Tarling got up and watched Stumbo and the second spot ride away . At the finish it was Breker, the Master of motocross , taking the checkered flag ahead of Stumbo and finally Tarling. Amateur Wayne Allen (400 Yam) rode an outstanding race. Allen started with the second wave of riders and was running 14th on the first lap and fourth overall at the finish. Upp was next followed by Pat Jones (250 Yam) and another amateur, Jeff Matthews (400 Yam) . Thomas "Bart" Mitchell (250 Yam) had possibly his best ride of the season finishing eighth overall despite a get off in the latter stages of the race. In the O pen Novice and Begi n ner race, Kevin Ca nt well (400 SSS) was the eventual winner. Kevin led for most of the race. Results are sketchy but it is known that Jerry Lowell (400 Yam) totally dominated the beginners from start to finish and is also thought to be in the top overall in that class. The 0·200 Novices and Begi n ners were really something to see. R ichard Parker (125 Hus) pulled some kind of a holeshot as he led Lome Crawford (125 Yam), Richard Barron (125 Yam), and Bill Goetsch (125 Suz) through the first lap with a big lead. It seemed as though the race would end in the same order that it started until Barron put the move on Crawford on the seventh lap. Then when everything appeared constant on the final lap , Barron shot past Parker on the uphill. Parker was ap'parently having some trouble, as he was riding and playing with something under th e tank . Barron came in for the win , Parker second , and Goetsch slipped past Crawford on a last lap effort for third . Lori-Fanner (250 Bu l) pulled off th e line and down the steep starting area ahead of Nona Richardson (250 KTM ) and sister Trisha Fanner (125 Bul). Lori Fanner unloaded from her bike before the end of the first loop , but recovered immediately. Richardson led the women around with L. Fanner able to maintain second. Dennise Jones .a nd her 125 Yamaha were running third. T . Fanner dropped back to fifth but was still first beginner. Incidentally, this is T. Fanner's first race ever. The next bike was mini rider Mark Heth (80 Yam), who must have begun passing women at once because he started in th e second wave with th e minis and was already running fourth overall . On the third lap L. Fanner passed Richardson for the lead and never had any more problems . Richardson stayed within striking distance th e whole wa y but could not pass . Heth moved his mini up to th ird overall for a great finish . T . Fanner captured first woman beginner and after the race her mother could be seen recovering from a hard day of watching. • Results in Results Section. Susman's holiday at Lightweights TT By Maureen Lee ELS INORE, CA, NOV . 20 If the Lightweights M.C . had been ab le to order the weather it coul dn't have been more perfect on Sunday . . . pity more of you scrambles people didn't com,e out. It was super. Mini rider Randy Wilkins showed the opposition he had the starting procedure figured out as he came off the line first in two motos . . . he flat got with it . .. must have been the boost he got from winning his firs t novice trophy the night before! Darren Hulbert took the class, working his wa y each time past Wilkins, Ken McIntyre , and Curtis Cannon (who spilled while leading the last mota). Mario Ayers and Brian Burch ti the 125 Novice class . Kevin Mason shoved a little too hard into tum one, lost it and really bailed off, losing his helmet in the process. Garth Beavers won the Amateur class , which was a bit of a procession. Expert 125's weren't in the best of fonn either with some DNFs including Bu d Carroll whose Yammie was .having seizures, not the neatest thing to happen at the end of the season when you're locked in a points battle for number one. Steve Polson. who currently is in second. won the cia with two firsts and a third, then came Jay Bales with a fourth and two' seconds. . There were only five 250 experts but, they made a go out of it. After a banzai start Joe Steffen was .reall putting the pressure on J e ff , Springman. Finally he got him on th~z back section, to wild cheers from Steffen fans . But coming up for t~ white flag Steffen slowed as if h_ thought he'd seen the checkered flag. It was an advantage that Larry Bird immediately took. Joel W indham looked awfully g~d for a 500 novice as he won that cia with three straight. In the amateurexpert 500 combo, those riders seem t~ have more talent than the othe classes , coming off the line elbow t' elbow. Don Grigsby waited until th last lap to pass Mike Montgome (wh a t we really mean is T ·Bon couldn't catch him until then). W never saw a more classic shutting 0 the door than Steve Loomis did to Charles Pettyl Next round Grigsby g~ out ahead and Vince Landry emerged second after a good race wit Montgomery. If it weren't for some pros who Iik to have fun on Sundays the Open cia would be scant indeed. But they enjo themselves . . . anyone know of any bus, drivers who drive buses on their day of~ for relaxation like our riders play witli bikes? Steve Miller made Bob Sande work quite hard in the second rnoto to stay'ahead of him . Last mota Sanders. came leaping off the line ahead of th starter and killed his engine by corning, to a screech ing halt. Off they wen again , Fortune leading, then Dyla Neihart . But by the end of the first la ~ Sanders was in second with Milleri third . and Pat Dobbins taking (for him) an interesting excursion off th track and through the infield . There's one more point run for 1977j gang, so let's all give the Gripste plenty of support on December II th at . Perris. If you haven't been out there since th e new owners took over. go . Say hello to new owner Len .. . he's neat people. See you therel • R esults in Results Section.
