Lou Ortali and Gene Peters got stoked in the ridge running section just before th e wash crossing and the ruts . Pat Krat oval was hot on Gene Peters' trail . Jan Morrison . Mike Easle y. J im Hruby and Jo e Sh eeh e opened th e carb slides to max and shot up the road. When Clarey Mercer. Sam Soule . John Gall agh er . DougJohns and Dave Jones hit the flat ar ea . they resembled a cavalry ch arge. The racers made thei r way down th e b ig dun e ca nyo n into the d eep whoops . H enry Price. Alyn Beckstead and Pat Dempsey cha rge d down th e wash a nd on into t he sandy sect ion befor e Means Dry Lake. John Hura , Mike Newman and Ron Duncan sho t across the lake with the left hand on the clutch just in case. Head ing for the long stretch of Melville Dry Lake wa s where the sputtering began. Gas was the reason for dropouts this week . The sand . flatlands . washes and roads d id a number on the consumption rate, The first bike into the pits was Eric McCracken then Miller . Gibson . Closson and Stephen. Dave Kennedy dropped into the wash ahead of Brad Hunsinger, Clarey Mercer a nd Chris Roesen . , Winding up the wash , th e course ju m ped ou t int o the flats loaded with yucc a and pucker bu shes. Gene Peters had senio r Henry Pri ce on his tail , who made up 14 positions in the process. The course crossed the wide wash then up the bank and the loo se rock uphill. J ohn Hura got by three rid ers her e. Heading left . John Marsh had Dave-jones trying to get by..Dick Evans had the same prob lem with Ron Duncan. Cr esting the uphill saddle. Vance Henderson. Bob McCl elland and Lou Orral i d escended into th e neat sa ndwash heading for the access road . Fl ying down the fast road . Mark Nelson , Bill Wackerman and Ken Bilbrey single filed . doing th e same once the course tu rn ed left aga in . Almost oversho ot ing th e left tum over th e kn oll . Jim Morrison had George Yule trying to make up tim e du e to loss of ga s followed by Gregg Pietak. McCracken had cleared the deep rainwashes , passed through th e tight on e trail downhill . through th e next wash and was in the process of winding h is wa y through the tight e nd u ro section at the top . Bob Miller was doing the same. Dan Closson was in no hurry he re. Heading for the black knoll just before Camp Rock . Gene Pete rs moved up five positi on s beh ind Stephen , Dave J ons picked off seven . Vance Henderson m oved up nin e as th e ra ce wound behind Sage Mountain a nd hom e. Ra cing down the wid e wash . across the open country sect ion headin g into the volcanic section . Bob . McC lelland gai ned seven positions . Lou O rt al i six . and Ken Bilbrey nine. McC racken crested the hill . shot d own the small wash to th e checkered an d overall win . If you loved th is race. you would have gone crazy over the Barstow to Vegas. The course was a half sca le . cond ensed version . The club may have lost the big race but not the talent and desire to go out and find a course with challenge and excitement, So if some of the older club members seem a little edgy this time of the year . th e lizard lovers .took the big o ne a wa y physically. but the memory is locked in forev er; so just bear with them. The beginners had their own start . th e long course took its toll on them too. Cliff Thomas was fi rst over all . first trail. Dennis Lovell was first 250 , Brian Burski first C. Cindy Miller first girl. The weather was wonderful. so is Rescue 3.
