The rider involved didn't even bother to see if Erik was all right or to report the accident. He just raced off into the night. The man wasn 't even a ra cer , just out joyriding. When the gate dropped the second time Harden jumped into the lead with Best in second. Heavy, heavy dicing took place between Harden and Best th r ou ghout the m o to with Harden holding off Best . jus t barely down to th e wire for top honors . Best crossed over to second overall. Jim Tassano (Ma i-Syklo p's) ra cked up a beautiful pair of back-to -hack wins to tak e th e 500 Pro class. In the first moto , Jerry Ash er led the pack up th e ' hill with T assan o in second and Andy J annings th ird . T assano a n d Jannin gs p assed Asher and laid the grou ndwork for their own private battl e. Asher , with bike problems , fell back as Steve Richard hel d down th ird with John Holmes running fourth . Holmes. look ing good after having been ou t of racing for awhile , was ridi ng a CZuki for Paul's Pr ecision Products. The bike consisted of 'a CZ engine in a Suzuki frame. Jannings continu ed t o hound and ha ssl e Tassano throughout the m oto , threatening to take over the lead 'a ny' second . How ever , Jannings mi ssed a gear and T assano was able to build a little sec u rity. Heading into th e home stretc h a nd co ming across for the chec kered n ag J annings cut in close in a bid for th e lead' but Tassan o held him off. The seco nd tim e around . Jannings took over with Tassano behind him and Ri chard running third . Once more a Tassano -Jannings' battl e shaped up with these two touch and go throughout the ra ce , Jannings now had built a bit of a lead with Tassano coming up out of the gully and closing in again. Coming along the sandwash Tassa no on ce more took cont rol and had to fight off Jannings down to th e wire. Tassano held firm and crossed over to top money for th e class , Jannings took home second over all and th ir d went to Richard . Results in Resul ts Section . Three pro riders left the' track as the owners of the CMC number one titl e and plate: Luke Messer , Open cla ss; Tim Lunde , 250;' and Peter Wank et, 125 cla ss . Unofficial tallies had Mike Bell as the winner of the 250 class number one honors . but this was not correct. Chris Chaffee roc keted his Yamaha off the gate and a rou nd th e Suzuki tower for an early lead in the Open Pro race.
