Back in third Tom Cross and Jocil w~re having differences of opinio n as to who was the possessor of third . After laps of bar-to -bar smashing, Jocil went down hard and left Cross all alone in third. Sensing the m ishap of J oci l , both Danny J ea n and Jonas Gaaf moved in on Cross a nd began challenging for the show spot. As Tc.ar used lapped riders to elude Musgrave in th e fina l laps, t he battle for third became a war of m achines. As the second mota rolled off , a close start had Musgrave again in the lead with Jean, Bill Kwight and Tola r following. On the second lap . Tolar put both Suzuki riders be hind and set out after Musgrave . O n the third la p Tolar slid by in a tigh t turn to ta ke the lead. For 10 laps the Yamaha of Musgrave gave chase to Tolar , bu t fa tigue casued constant mistakes in Musgrave a nd dropped him way back in the field. Gaaf now took over secon d after a dead last start. Jean and Cross were going at it right behind, p utting . trem e ndous pressu re on Gaaf. As several lapped riders Cluttered the track , Gaaf pu lled way out ahead of third-p lace Cross. At the flag Tola r rolled across to an ea sy overall win followed by Gaaf th en Cross. In the Open Pros, Br ian Craze and Bill R ubly traded wins and a fourth place finish , b ut the overall winner was John Hormlla . With consistent second place finis hes . Hormlla took Rubly. Craze and Carl Gagafy on a merry-go-round of place swappings , a nd the overalls went in that same order. Pro action in th e 125 class saw Jim Dornann ride hard and fast enough to capture the overall win with two first place finishes . Rick Maki followed in both motos but was unable to come close to the speed of Domann . In the first mota Maki followed the ho leshot of Domann and th e d uo ran away from the pa ck .
