Don ald McDaniel was th e number two rider eac h m ot o , but had his work cu t.out as Greg Mc Bride nosed him a ll th e wa y. Go rd o n Loar was the hot shoe in both th e Open Novice a nd Sp ecial Novice classes. In race o ne of th e Open Novi ce cla ss, Loar was so fa r o ut front he seemed alm ost las t. Michael Roach (Cl ) was number two with Yamaha's G ary J ohnson a close third . Moto two had Roach number one. T h is wa s a t ig h t ra ce wi th Lo ar ca ree ning his Kawasak i a ro u nd the co u rse a rid J ohnson following in his footstep s. The final race saw Loar back on 10 1' with Roach , tryin g every tric k he knew in seco nd . Loar hel d on to fir st with a strong g rip asJ o hnso n was ag ain third . Ag a in rnor o one saw Lo ar leading the pack. but this class he polish ed off with a win in all three mot os. Mich a el R o a ch p ic ked up seco nd in moto on e. but was held to third by Ga ry Ka uffeld . T he fina l race . Gordon pull ed th e holeshot and took 10 th e track like a d uck in wat er. Vince Burna was next in lin e a nd Gary J ohnson was thir d . Kauffeld a nd Roach were out of this rac e and the on ly th ing tha t kept them seco n d a nd thi rd overa ll wa s the ir good fin ish es in th e first two races. O n Decem ber 4, Elsino re Raceway is p u tt ing on a C ha llenge Ra ce . J im Sterner ro cked a nd roll ed his O d yssey to victory. Th roughout th e first moto he ha d C a rl Sterner lum beri ng up behind him a nd keeping the h ea t o n. Lonnie T errell from O ildale felt right a t ho m e a nd kep t rig ht on the ba ck of Sterner. In t he seco nd moto th e Odysseys slip ped and slid through every turn , spin ning into t he berms, jumping the track and chasing specta tors up th e hi lls; they had a fine timel Through it all 't he Sterner gang controlled first a nd seco nd with Butch Kelley ru n ning a solid th ird . Fin all y J im broke away. boppin g h is way over Can -Am H ill with a ll the grace of a n elephant in la bo r a nd held h is lea d down to the end of it a ll. Carl too k seco nd overall with Kelley th ird.
