Bruce W indham slides his Suzuki t o second at Elsinore Raceway in t he Special Race. Shekell, wh o had not raced fo r a month. showed he had not lost much as he jammed in right behind. Pete Wanket . riding his Yamaha , was close with FMF riders Hess and Le tt follo wing. Gom ez kept on cookin ', making no mi stakes and going on for the win with Shek ell , Wanket , H ess and Lett behind . In the second moto Gomez and Shekell ta ngl ed just after the gate fell , ca me o ut of it , and as everyone squeezed in to the first turn t hey tangled again. Hess cranked around t he turn with Lett a nd W a n ket behind. but Gomez and Shekell were still not m ovin g . Gom ez got goi ng and filed in behind the pack. Sh ekell finall y go t rest arted and went W FO after th e pack . H ess led it all th e way as Wanket slip ped into seco nd with Gomez working into third. Sh ekell , wh o was flying, took fourth with Lett fifth. ' In th e 250 Pros Hess took both holesh ots and both wins. Wanket had b ike probl ems a n d Tim Lunde crashe d . Mike St earns took second overall as Tim Ma rsh (Yam) got third . In the Open Pro race Chris Chaffee won top honors, Max Maple wa s seco nd and Cha rli e Backus third . Results in Results Section. ' Mota one of the Special class went to Bud Wa nbaugh, a rider who is a lways righ t in there for the second place. But this was his starring night. W ith a back row start every race , be cause th e novices were also included in here , Bu d managed to win every time. Tony Flo res led for the first three la ps u nti l Wanbaugh saw the white flag waving and made the kill. Bru ce Windham was third. Jim Summers. just turned amateur. was up against a' hot shoe of an expert in the 250 Amateur/Expert class. Dorothy Rowe. the one and 20 only expert came up with the win every mota. Mota one Summers led for two laps until Dorothy came roaring a rou nd him. She had started on the jump . Race two Summers held Dorothy off until lap four when the white flag signaled one more lap . Dorothy turned her Yamaha on as Summer s m ade a mistake that cost him the win a nd th e second too, for Bruce Windham used this o p po rt u ni ty to snatch seco nd. The fina l ra ce Jim finally got his win , Doro th y ki cked ba ck th e who le ra ce a nd let the boys h ave th e to p two positions. T here was only o ne poi nt Old Timers trick or treat MX DE ANZA , CA , OCT . 30 Blackie Lewis (Ma i) was a treat to watch in the first moto, but the second moto his new engine played a trick on th e last lap. giving that win to Marvin Ols on . wh o came from last place. Lew is came b ac k on the third mota to take the gold. Marvin Olson had no Maico problems , but did have some physical ones. He looked like the ladies volunteer firs t aid group had been practicing on him l He managed a second. With masters and experts going off the line together, it was hard to decide if Cal Browning was an expert. Ca l, taking the expert gold , came in right behind Olson on the first mota , rig ht on AI Dennler in the second and the third mota found him looking for Olson - both masters. Sam J ones has to be in the best sha pe ever, riding the firs t two rnot os flying into second . Third m ota bike problems gave him third overa ll. Amateur Jim J ones went all theway taking firs t. The Jones brother s must be o n all the right physical fitness programs because th ey just don't get tired . Pete Kla ssen , riding his Yamaha as if he was a rodeo rider going for top points, stro ked in for seco nd . Kenny W atts had a rea son to rid e well today - he wanted to impress h is new brid e , Dottie, Kenny took a third , but to Do t he's a lways in first pl ace. Don J e nsen o f the Novice cl a ss moved into firs t p lace on the th ird m o t a after two seconds. ta ki ng n umber one. Ray Arn old had the two firsts , bu t went down in t he third moto to inspect the track. T hese o ld birds a re tough , When they go down, they a re a little slow getting up , but once on th eir machines, they finis h wh at th ey start . Ro bert Beasley m oved into th ird overa ll, with a th ird , fou rt h a nd a second. Twisting turns made the Manning I RR a real thriller. Mitchell (Ossa) b a ttl e , with Peck ending up the winner. 250 Expert riders had a tough time keeping th eir bikes together , but R . Blankenship ( Ka w) led all th e way with G . Ludwig (Suz) right behind. ' Open N ovic es had B. Bib ee (Yam) leading and R , Porter (Ya m) who had bik e trouble, came in second . Open Experts had one he ck of a race with B. Oxley (Ya m) leading the pack and Rich Ba rn es on his ne w '78 Yamaha chasin g hi m all the way. Results in Resul ts Sect ion . Billy the Bullet wins three at ManningRR By Jim Lester WILLOW SPRINGS , CA , NOV. 6 New winners in Perris Short track andTT By Phi l W ul ff PERRIS , CA , NOV . 5 The 12 week High Point Series got off to a slow start , but the ra cing was fast and heavy. With not enough 80's to make a short track class, Nov ice Rob Hassey (Yam), J eff W illiams (Yam) and Baron Bibee (Yam) o n his 100 , had q uite a race. H assey took over firs t pl ac e on the third m ota . The 250 Novice race , saw Steve Peck (Ya m) a nd Gro ve r Riley (Ya m) battling for fir st with Peck taking the lead . T he 250 Experts bunched tight with Terry Singleton (Am m ex) in the lead, b ut he soo n fell back to third . Jack Sm ith (Yam) . took over and Gary Ludwig (Su z) pulled out a second. Baron Bibee, loc a l Perris resident , riding for th e first tim e . won the 500 Open Novice race . Expert Brad Oxley (Yam) , ri ding at Perris for the first time since opening night , picked up a first with Rick Blankenship nip pi ng at his wheels. With no TT class for the 80 's , J . Williams (Yam) tested out his 80 wit h th e 125's and ga ve them a run for their money. Dale Whitem an (Yam), took the lead ea rly a nd kept it, with Brian Gotschall (Han) and Pat March (Yam) trying to make th eir mov es, but with no success. T he 250 Novice T'T sa w St eve Peck (Yam, Grover Riley (Yam ) and Bill Nearly 100 pavement aces trekked out into th e desert near Lancaster, braving icy wind gusts up to 40 mph . for the penultimate Manning Road Race of 1977 . Le e Fleming (Kaw) , Billy "T he Bullet " Addingt on (Ka w), and Did Kilgroe ( Kaw) thundered off th e line together in the Open Production race and got into a sensational battle for th e lead . Fleming's m ot or was the first casualty of the bl isterin g pace , as he coasted into t he pits on t he third la p . Addingt on held th e lead going into the last lap , with Kilgroe dra fting, an d th en p assin g him a t turn one . With Addingt on breathin g down hi s neck. Kilgroe tri ed to brake too la te at turn two, and went off into the d irt at over 90 mph. Addington was left to cruise to the checkered flag ahead of Chuck Parme ( Ka w). Bill also won th e FourStroke Grand Prix and Super Cafe races , and might have won his fourth race of the day, but the scheduled Match Race against Kilgroe had to be cancelled a fter Dick's crash , David Emde (Mack Cycles Yamaha) took ove r the 250 G P points lea d fro m Ron H lavka wit h a wire-to-wire win over G len Shopher (Concord Yamaha) and Eric Ba tt OBS Yamaha) . Harry Kl in zm a n n 's potent ial cha llenge fizzled when the 250 he 'd borrowed from Eddie Lawso n seized in practice. Emde (750 Yamaha) also breezed in th e Open GP race , but John Glover (25 0 Yamaha ) a n d Addington (Yosh im u ra Kawasaki) scratched back and fort h for seco nd , with Addington slightly faster o n the stra ights , and Glover quicker through t he turns .
