The Tower takes its toll at Puyallup MX BySue Sykes PUYALLUP. WA . OCT . 30 The Tower J um p was the action spot of the fifth East-West Challenge motocross race . This was the mean part of the track all day that unloaded many riders. Bill J oyce (Suz) went sideways in th e first lap of 125 Pros. and when Bill I dumped it you could hear hi m crack all over. His helmet will never race agai n. Kell y Dolphin (Suz) rolled by, gave Bill a lit tle ta p, th en tangled with T om Peterson (Yam). J oyce was out of the race. a big disappointment after h is first rnot o win . Ron Sun (H us) was th e bri ght spot in this rainy race day, as he put a 2·2 ride tog ether to claim th e overall m on ey. Th e 125 Int ermediate class was ' wa tc hi ng , and when th ey hit " Billy's , Hill" seven bikes . rid ers. a nd manyo parts ended in a pile . Kenny New was on the bo ttom of a ll th e mess, not badly hu rt b ut tir ed of waiti ng to get untangled. T he 250 Pro class was fu ll of riders I ready to try thei r skill on th e Trans AMA co urse , some getti ng practice forn the big ra ce. T h e money went to Bill Joyce (Suz) for the win . Bill put it all] together a fte r his fa ll in th e 125 race., with two wins and a go od share of the m on ey . Bill' s riding buddy Ron , Pom eroy had his foot in th e door most , of th e way. Bob Klemp (Suz) cla imed th e Open Pro check for his 2-1 rid e . Bob pl ayed follow th e leader with Ga ry Elliot in mot o o ne but passed Dale Barker just in tim e fo r the second m oto win . Haney, Spence battle for number one at D·36 rough scrambles By Ann Carr LOD! & OA KDA LE , CA , OCT. 29·3 0 The battle for top positions for 1977 in Distric t 36 mini and scrambles racing continued in the San Joaquin Valley this weekend as the Lodi and Oakd a le Motorcycle C lu bs hosted back -to -b a ck r ough scrambles featu res . t: Den nis Spence slipped past the 250 Experts on Saturday only to watch 16year-old Jeff Haney grab off the hea vily contested 500 main and come withi n two po ints of the 1977 number. one place for scrambles. On Sunday at Oakdale neither racer could manage better than the last payoff spot as Mitch and Ted Davidson won the 125 and 500 expe rt mains whi le diminutive Dennis Da vis took his second payoff of the weekend by winning th e 250 race. T h ese three winners should a ll advance closer to plate positions for 1978 . In the mini ranks current number o ne Doug Chandler , barring unforeseen circumstances, has put 24 points worth of daylight between himself and Tracy Hays of Stockton for top mini honors , but Bill Arbogast , Bruce Johnson . Greg Brewer, Mark Key , Chris Carr, and Joe Brazil are battling for either first time plates or advanced positions for next yea r . Arbogast rode in tough luck at Lodi but followed with a strong second behind Hays at Oakdale. Meanwhile, Brazil and Carr took advantage of falls to advance Saturday and Brazil picked u p a hard-earned third on Sunday. The mini pl ate race should also go down to the last race on Nov . 27 . . The race Nov. 27 at Hill's Ferry Raceway, will benefit area racer Mark Mus cio who was seriously injured in motocross competition several weeks ago . Results in Results Section. •
