I I 18 Friday night's ope n speedway race on the half-mile dirt oval lived up to what fans ha ve come to expect of a speedway show. They used a starting ga te and lined up fe.\'{er.rid ers for each race. Prac tice and time trials were completed by 8 p ,m. and the first race got u nder way on sched ule at 8: 30 . Bruce Penhall, one of the top th ree rider s in the Na tion als, found the track much to his liking. He won th e Scratch Main Event over five-time U.S. Champion Mike Bast. Scott Autrey. win ner of bo th mai n event s two weeks ago, wat ched th e races from t he infield . He d id no t rid e this ti me . Three and fourwheel motocross By Chuck Burris CH ULA VISTA , CA , NOV . 6 Anderson axes AMCMX By Chuck Burris Stan Hayes (T) and Gary Kaahnert dueled on ATC90s at South Bay, .' NOV. 6 It had rained the night before and the winc1 blew in the early morning leaving the track tacky, and no dust blew, even at the end of the day . The 125 Pros were the first out and they were berser . Scott Anderson of Escondido Suzuki was back after a month layoff from a knee injury . He went WFO with Mike Tripes and Don Fuller also of Escondido Suzuki in pursuit. Fuller's plug fouled , dropping him back as Chris Grodzichi moved into third. Tripes got by Anderson and went on for the win with Grodzichi third. In the second moto Anderson held the' lead all the way with Grodzichi taking second and David Metje (Suz) third. In the 250 Pro event Doug Boyd (Suz) got the holeshot in the first moto and took off with Escondido Suzuki's Mike Sale right beh ind . Abi an Lelevier , on 'his Maico, filled in the th ird position as th e th ree went at it. Boyd moved awa y from Sole and fin ished first wit h a small lead while Lelevie r took third. In the second mot o Boyd again appea red the man 10 beat a nd Jer ry Stewart (who DNFed the first m ota ) ga ve him a go for it bu t could no t sta y with Boyd. Ste wart finished second ah ead of th ird plac e Sale, South Bay Park Speedway 117 in San Diego was the site for the first annual ATC and Odyssey N a tional Cham pionships. A special track had been lai d out , resem bling a mellow m otocross. Ri ders were getting air off the jumps thoug h , and in the m odifi ed Odyssey class four m achines flipped within the first few turns . The sp ect ato r s had an u nrea l 'tim e scre aming, ch eering and com pletely cleaning out th e-snack bar. f , During th e int ermission a Honda Odyssey FL250 , with its trailer , w~s given awa y by Honda of Sa n Dieg . Holiday -Honda of Chula Vista, and • Pacific Honda in Pacific Beach. Other prizes and awards totaling $3 ,060 were awarded to the winners. • The race program was run without confusion and , despite some very radical cr ashes, no one was injured. In the Stock Junior class Denny Stover got the first mota holeshot and began a duel with Ste ve Wright. The two diced in the twelve lap moto until Denny finally pulled away. But on the last lap he lost his chain , giving the win to Steve , while Tom Berkshire took third. In the second moto Steve got the ho leshot with Tom and Denny behind. The three never cha nged place. In the class two Powd er Puff, Kathy Elms rod e awa y with t he first mo to win , while Cindy Hawley won the second mo to . T he Open class Powder Puff winner was Janet Bricker , who rip ped it in both mo tos, Mark W eixeldoifer was flying in th e men's class with. Bob W illiams ri!l"ht behind hopi ng Mark wou ld make a mistake . Ma rk never did and rode easily to the win with Bob second and Ken H a ray th ir d. T he seco nd moto went just th e sa me but Bob gave Ma rk a better race. The a tmosphere was tense and sportsmanship faltered slightly both on and off th e track , as one last effort was made to reach th e fina ls. Chuck Cheek Bellflower) did as he has all season by winning the 250 Intermediate class. David Hopwood (Mead ow) in the Mini Junior class goes into the finals with a good record and should be interesting to watch as was his win this week. Ron Tebbs (Calif. H igh) has had a consistent season and has been a pleasure to watch in the O pen Pro class. Another Pro with a consistent record . in the 125 class. and likewise enjoyable to wat ch has been Tony Gomez (Cerritos). Ladell and Ryan Eide, both riding for Gahr, have had anoth er good season and scored well for their school. Going into the finals , th e 125 Intermediate class is up fo r grabs as it has been a ll season . The large class of 125 Juniors with three d ivisions sho uld be very excit ing , with the championship a hard victory.
