Cal's 33rd Annual desert Turkey Chase Sunday, but he did n 't do it without a fight . The b om b run was solid wind.r ip p les, with no hot set·up to give anybody an early lead. As a result , the forty leaders arrived at the bomb in a solid clump. A mile further out , a rid er crashed. a second rider plowed int o him , and then a third . All told 2~ bikes piled up . Nobody was hurt , but it did sp a ce th e riders out a little. By first check , Bob Ru tt en ha d a healthy lea d , with Bruce Olgivie and Mike Edmondson running second and a close third . By th e end of the first loop Rutten had a full m inute lead . Ogil vie and Edmundson were still in second and th ird , with a m inu te on fourth place Brya n W right , Div. I expert. So it was no small feat for Bruce Ogilvie on h is 250 to beat out Edmondson on a 40 0. Bob R u tt en , with an unbeatable lead, broke down a mile from the finis h . This pu t Edmondson in the lead , but about this time he made a mistake that cost him first overall . He turned around , gestu red to Ogilvie that he (Ed m o n d so n) wa s the "cha m p ." Bob Perkins was first senior amateur heavyweight. Bob was just elected AMA Dist rict ~ 7 president for 1978, but th at wasn't why he came across the fin ish line grinning fro m ear to ea r Sunda y. Seems that fellow Shamrock Ron Hubbard once bet that Perkins would never bea t hi m in a ny race where ne ither of them brok e down , stopped to hel p a nother rider , etc. , bu t th at if Perk ins ever did beat him H ub ba rd wo u ld se ll h is b ikes, h is mororhorne , th e wh o le kit -n' < ka boodle , and give up racing.
