Cleveland Na tional Forest no ground fires are permitted. However, stoves are acc eptable. Bikers are al so rem inded that what th ey pack in, th ey m ust pa ck out. All bik ers are urg ed to carry plenty of water esp ecially in sout hern California . Th e Cleveland ~ N ational Forest is consid ered a dry forest, conse quen tly , bik ers sho uld not - d epend solely on stream sources fo r th eir water supply . For portio ns of th e trail still . incom plete, bikers should note the etra il sym bol burned in the ends of wooden stakes. Individuals should also be ackno wledgea ble a bo ut t rail location and towns along the way for < emergency purposes. Tra ve lers are t advised to stick close to the trail. T he , n ecessary righr -of -iuays have been obtaine dfor th e comp leted portions of ~t he trail. How ever, this does no t iauthorue off- trail cam ping or riding. I Th e Pacific View Tra il is design ed to offer th e tra il rid er a varied ex pe rie n ce through dramat i c elevations ranging f rom 200 ' to 13, 000' in clud ing mixed t errain and , vegetation and animal differences . Th e Pacific View Trail tests th e bike r's will and fortitude, requiring skill and ab ility in a challenge against and with , the natural eleme nts. Once a dream , th e Pacific View Tra il is quickly becoming a reality for more and more eople to expe rience and enjoy. 2 There you have it. My imaginary new s release , but it's not totally im agi n ary. The news release is real with th e exception of changing the ...- word hik er to biker or trail rider in the text . This fantasy is actually a long term dream that I have anguished over ~i nce th e inception of the "green stickie.' Hikers do not pay for their spon, and yet they enjoy the complete . and full cooperation of governmental agencies , even though they bring the .same problems to the woods as we bikers do. Seeing this clearly, I felt the "green stickie" was the tax tha t co uld support an e ffort of t h is t yp e. Unfortunately , o ur governmental agencies a re controlled and run by people who for the most part would p refer to see us bikers q uarantined because we m ight spread the disease of feeling free and becoming one with machin e as well as na ture. ~ A good examp le is th e past di rector of the State's Park and Recreat ion Dep a rtm ent . Most of us already know of the infamous Mr. R hod es who told a group of motorcyclists to "stay cool" the very eve of the auditors' report on the m isapp ropr iation and mismanagement of millions of dollars of OR V registration funds. I feel t ha t th e dream that came true for the hik ers can come true for us two -wh eeled back packers. We m a y hav e to fight , reeducate many people , and in th e final analysis, it may com e down to pure political power. There are severa l ways to sta rt on ou r "yellow brick road." We can wri te our sta te lobbyist and te ll him we want our own tra il system . In tu rn , he could lobby for ou r dream . It wouldn't hu rt to j o in th e Cal iforn ia lobbyin g org aniza tion M.O .R.E . , which stands for Mot orcycle Owners, Riders, and Enthusiasts, to help finance his efforts. An other good approach m ight be to write th e director of th e Cal ifornia State Parks and R e cre ati on Department and insist that green sticker money be spent for trails. Write your stat e and federal representatives and clearly exp lai n what you want . Here are the addresses of those people you might write to : Russ Sanford .
