On October 13, 1977 , Mike Kidd took one day from his very busy schedule to talk with junior high students about his job , the racing profession, motorcycles and racing as well as sportsmanship. attitude , education and life . He was excellent. He is a credit to the racing profession and to our country, Here is a fine young man for students to use as a hero who bel ie ves in himself, his co untry, education a nd the famil y image. Just a short note to let you know that the United States Motorcycle Jamboree is on for t he Memorial Day weekend in 1978. It will be held in Bakersfield, California once again , the image given to the city and publ ic last year was great. The city has invited us ba ck . There will be more exhibits and products booths than last year - more people to buy and look . Last year we had over 4 ,000 bikes, everything from antiques to choppers and all types in between. Our Mr. and Ms. Jamboree will be chosen by vote this yea r from wit hin the riding enthusiast population . J AC K McC O RMACK Coalinga, CA Quack ! Quack! In the last week I have received over 50 let ters from individuals and groups interested in the Ba rst ow- to- Vegas Trail Rid e . Things are really looking up . I also received a letter from Russell Shay of the Sierra Club , He didn't enclose a copy of the latest OR V Monitor as he stated in the letter, and he didn't enclose a SASE for his requested B to V information , so he won 't hear from me . I bet Shay would like to hear from me, but there is no way. I used to use the pen and words to fight for our rights. and it just didn't work out. Now, I believe that action is the only way (that's physical action , legal of course) we can ever hope to regain what we have lost. Box 498, Long Beach, CA 90801. a ve ry special dre am of mine . Although many of these news releases merely contain propaganda and ORV restrictions th is one particular release reminded me of this dream of mine , the Pacific Crest Trail. There is this motorcycle trail from Mexico to Canada , Just think of the scenery and adventure that this type of trail would offer. Congress thought it was a good idea , and the Pacific Crest Trail was promoted through th e " N a tiona l Trail System Act," The catch is that the trail is only for hikers . Now that I've acquainted you with the Pacific Crest Trail , let me get back to that news release I was talking about. Being a trail and enduro rider as well as an occasional backpacker . the la test Forest Service news release sent me into a trip of fantasy as on ly a fellow motorcyclist can imagine - our own trail system . just like other forms of recreational transportation enjoy. I soon found myself changing and modifying the words in th e news release as follows : Cleveland National-Forest Release #102B October 4, 1977 For immediate release Pacific View National Scenic Tra il ribbon cutting ceremony to be held • Saturday, October 8. San Diego : On Saturday, October 8th , at 9: 30 a. m. at the Desert View Picnic Area on Mt. Laguna, a ribbon cutting ceremony will take place honoring the completion of the Pacific View Trail within the boundaries ofthe Cleveland National Forest . Over 230 miles of trail have been constructed through the efforts of: Forest Service employees, individual and group volunteers, Pacific View Trail R idin g Clu b, and Forest Service private contracts . Over 90% of the maintenance of t he Pacific View T rail is handled through volunteer work efforts. The Pacific View Trail established by Congress under the National Trail Syst em A ct of Oct ober 2, 1968, crosses three states - California, Oregon, an d Washington, traverses 23 N ational Forests , seven National Parks, five State Parks, other federal lands, and numerous portions of state and local government, and privately owned lands. The U.S. Department of Agriculture was assigned jurisdiction over the 2,500-mile trail unth. the chief responsibility for construction and maintenance of the trail. The Bureau of Land Management is assisting on lands under theirjurisdiction. Pacific View travelers biking the trail which ext ends from th e Mexican Border are reminded that in th e tlt'Hf// , . ,.; /7,f./T)/tJp /JtJtf'7f~tz'£m 7R%lif)/ ";&:I/#.'... !IA'm ytJtI N'RtJh'6; &JIJ: /PlJIILY ~nlTlUGlIT. _/ AlH~! ~~~_ \ /?, --~!JJZJ{:<' M,~~
