In the first moto, he took over the lead with Danny Magoo Chandler {KTr.-q right behind . Dean Taylor was running third . An unbelievable battle developed between Nicol and Magoo until Magoo went down and Taylor moved into second. Magoo later grabbed second ba ck again and closed fast on Nicol. Nicol held on throughout the white flag lap to hold off Chandler for the win . The second time off th e line Nic ol again took over, th is time with Jeff Spoor running second in his first pro ride! Spoor held onto second until Magoo a rrived on the scene and started applying heavy pressure . Coming out of the gully, Magoo got by and set out for Nicol. Taylor was having h is own battle with Greg Torgerson when the two collided and Torgerson did a flip over the bars. Magoo pushed Nicol all the way down to the wire but was held back in second. When the flag came out Nicol had the overall win , Chandler took second and Spoor in his first pro race , took a fantastic third overall. The 250 Juniors had one of the most hair-raising races seen in a long time. Throughout most of the first moto , bikes and riders went colliding and flipping through the air. Through it all , Joel Harriott emerged in th e lead followed by J im Neubauer and Brad Challman. Harriott maintained his co o l and to ok the overall win. Challman took seco nd pla ce hon ors and thi rd went to Craig Thompson . Andy Jannings (Ya m) dom ina ted the 500 Pros throughou t both motos for a pair of wins and th e top money for the class . In bo th rid es he fought wit h J im Tassano (Mai ) an d Jerry Ashe r. In spite of bik e problem s throughout the secon d moto , Tassano held on to second. keeping Asher in third . Results in Results Section . Dumo/Hicks duel highlights AME YouthMX By J udy Greenberg VALENC IA , CA , OCT. 21 The hottest com petition at Friday night's A.M .E. Youth Division race was the never ending battle, for. first place between Junior Cycle Experts Buddy Dumo and Eddie Hi cks . Dumo fired off the line with Hicks inches behind. It appeared a centrifugal force kept the two riders from separating, as they rocketed through the tight turns, with Dumo holding the lead down to th e wire . In the second moto Hicks was in control , as Dumo hopelessly tried to .find a way around. It wasn 't until the last lap that Dumo was able to use the extra power on his modified Italjet to shoot by Hicks coming out of t he sweeper for a 1·1 finish . It was an unusual night of ra cing; mo st of the lead riders flew into untouchable positions afte r th e first . Iap , lea vin g the action beh ind them . Mike Moss ch a rged off to win both motos of the 83cc Modified Junior 12 an d over class . Bobb y Wrigh t lost his early second spot to T ige Swa rtz. Dwayne Lewis pushed Wright for th e third spo t . but went down . losing ~ fourth to Bri tt Linden. The second time Moss was being pressed by W right , until he broke away for another victory. Swartz couldn't catch the fleeing second-place W right wh ich lost him the second overall. Aircone rider Jack Greenberg too k commandin g leads to win all motos of th e 83c c Intermed iate and 105cc Open classes. In the first moto of the 0-105cc Open , the action was for second a nd third. Pesky's Cindy Dumo h ad her work cu t out keep ing Rod Stiles (Electro) behi nd her, as David Seek ins tried to overtake Stiles. He almost accomplished th is as he tried to swee p u nderneath Stiles, but Stil es poured it on to ga in ex tra ground . Stiles th en caught Dumo and m oved to her side , ,b ut she managed to keep her wheel in fro nt for second . Moto two , Gr eenberg was off again , to lea ve Dum o with , th e g uys challenging her for th e second spot. The lady pulled it off with strong defen sive riding. Results in Resul ts Sect ion . Kippy Pierce bests Simons, Cole in AME $1,000 250 Pro race By Lee Taylor VALENCIA , CA , OCT. 23 Over 50 250 Pros turned out for AME's $1 ,000 Purse race. In addition to the riders , the race drew a heavy crowd of spectators including O tt o Maisch , owner of the Maico factory and the President of Maico West, Mr. Eckhart Schorn. Two qualifiers were run plus a consolation heat , with the top 10 from each transferring to the main . Aft er th ree hot and hea vy motos of dueling with close to 30 ride rs . Kippy Pierce emerged th e ch am pion , riding for Yamaha , taking home th e lion 's sh are of th e purse. In the first qualifier , Donni e Hansen (Int. Yamaha) led the pack to th e top of th e h ill th en went down , ou t of th e race . Monte McCo y crashed off t he drop -off a n d wa s out. Both Hansen and McCoy ca me ba ck in the Con sola tion hea t. Ga ry Dent on too k over the lead and held it through the ra ce . Danny " Magoo " Chandler was ha ving a terrible time. He kept going down and com ing back up again. finall y managin g to fin ish second. John Atwood was in third an d held his position to th e end. In th e second qual ifier . Mike Sh oemak e r ( I nt. Yamaha ) took control of the race. Ed Cole (C· AKolbe) worked his wa y up from last place to fifth by the end of the ra ce. Shoemaker wound up first , Bill Cook seco nd and Larry Watkins (Suz Pesk y's) in th ird. The consolation heat got off to a rough st art with McCoy and Greg Torgerson getting tangled up in their rear tires . McCoy's toe was injured and he was out for the day. The second time off the line, Donnie Hansen took over and held his lead with Will y Simons running second and Kippy Pierce holding down the third place slot. At the start of the first moto of the main , Doug Nicol led the pack up the hill. Gary Denton (S uz- S uz , of Pomona) moved on into the lead as Clark Jones took over second. It was' a disappointing day for D enton. No sooner d id he take over th e lead when his bike broke. Jones moved into the lead with Hansen in second and challenging hard . Hansen took over control and a b attle royale developed for t hi rd between T racy Oswell , Magoo Chandler , down from Forest H ill , and Kurt Sofk a . Oswell moved on into second lea ving Jones and Magoo to do ba tt le. Bouncin g through a deep , rough sandwash , Magoo moved on by a nd set out to ta ke Oswell. Oswell was just inches behind H anse n going over the drop-off and made his pass on landing. Magoo wen t down in spite of the built -in gyros cope his fans swea r he h as, setting hi m way ba ck in the pack . Oswell began to open up a lead as Kippy Pierce and Eddie Cole were runn ing seco nd a nd third res pec tively. H a nsen , with a fla t tire , was set back co nside ra b ly. Magoo was working h is way ba ck up throu gh th e pack and landed in fifth by th e en d of th e moto . Oswell held t he lead to th e end with Pierce and Cole second and third . When th e gat e dropped for th e seco nd tim e , N icol again too k over th e lea d . W illy Simons was running a tight second with J ohn Atwood in th ird . . Oswell was holdin g down th e fourth place slot. Nico l DNF'ed leaving the prize position open to Simons. Magoo was in fifth and righ t on the back tir e of M ik e W ick ersham ( Ma i-P hil's M.C .). Getting by on th e drop-off, Magoo set out to ge t Oswell. There was a su per tigh t ra ce going down ' for second between Atwood , Oswell and Magoo . Heading into the gu lly, Magoo m ade it by Oswell and set out to take Atwoo d . Simons was all by himself out in front. Jumping down into the sandwash loop , Atwood , Magoo and Eddie Col e , who had worked his way up , wer e three abreast. Cole emerged in second with Magoo not gi ving him any room a t all . Leaping up out of th e sa ndwash side by side , wheels banging, Magoo finally moved on by. Pierce was closing on Col e taking him on th e far end of the track . When th e checkered flag came out Simons sa iled across for the win . Da nn y " Magoo" Chandler took second and Pierce took third , good enough for a first overa ll. Seco nd overall went to Sim ons and th ird to Cole. Simons (Ya m · DG) took control of th e 125 Pros wit h back -to -ha ck wins out of a class of 30 riders after winning the second rn oto for the 250 Pros and gat hering seco nd overall.
