CA . OCT. 25 Every' now and then, two cycle shops will get together with all their riders and have a match race. The result is a lot of fun for everyone involved. That is exactly wh at th e owner of Victorville Suzuki had in mind when he talked with Lane Hodgin of Redlands Suzuki. Both parties thought it was a great id ea and plans were soon being made. The first meeting of th e four race series wou ld be at 595 Cycle Park. Victorville's home ground, and following ra ces would alternate between 595 and DeAnza Cycle Pa rk in Sunnymead. Th e Redland r iders displayed enthusiasm and 19 of them showed up in enemy te rritory , all wearing identica l shop jerseys and all ridin g Su zukis . Victo ri vlle, although less uniform and not as well organized, was prepared with 24 riders. The first moto of 250 Pro action started with Dave Ohl (Red / Suz) grabbing the holeshot. Jim Fishback (400 Yam) . who was forced to ride with the 250s because of a lack of Open Pros, took the .lead from Ohl before one lap was done. On la p two , Ohl fell , allowing Mike Brown (Vict/ Suz) 10 get int the 250 class lead. The race continued and Victorville pushed their way to the front of the pack , displaying their superior knowledge of the track . By lap four , t he top rid ers were ( ex cl u d in g Fishback); Brown , Don Simon ian ( V ictiSu z) and Tyrone Brown (Vict /C-A) . Fishback stayed out in front for th e entire race with Mike Brown remaining in th e lead of the 250s. With two laps to go , Tyrone Brown passed Simonian for secon d . In roun d two , Fishback sta rted ou t in front. Fish ba ck was, once again . just riding with the 250s , not racing against them . So the 250 lead was in the hands of Simonian: who was holding off Mik e Brown . Tyron e Brown was holding down third . T he order stayed th at wa y ' until lap 12. wh en Fishback dropped out with a derailed chain. Simonian went on to the moto win followed by Mike then , Tyrone Brown. Dave Ohl was in fourth . In the overall standings , it was a Victorville sweep . top money going to Mike Brown, then Simonian and Tyrone. Ohl fin ished in fourth overall: just out of th e money. Larkin Wight. an Open Intermediate on a Yamaha IT endu ro, mingled with the leaders in th e second rnoto , riding in the lead for several laps. He too wa s scored separately. Redlands got back in the 125 Pro race. Clint Carman (Red/Suz) took top placings in both motos with Andrew Jefferson (Vier/ Sus) taking second . Redlands also took the 250 Intermediate class (Danny Burtt) and the 250 Beginner class (Gary Merrill) . Victorville had wins in the 250 Novice cla ss (Lee Granlee), th e Open Novice clas s (Wayne Dohrman) and th e 125 Intermediate class (Den nis Crea son ). Who won ? It was SO close that a winner would be hard to ch oose. If' hairs a re split, then th e first round would probabl y go to Victo rvill because of their 250 Pro domination. But th ere are still three races to go :' two of th em at DeAnza , which is Redlands' home ground . J Results in Results Section . ,Taylor ice~ CMC Irwindale MX win By Tom Corley IRWINDALE, CA .
