Harding edged out Dan Huls for the title by two points in the last points-paying moto of, the season , Sept. 1: Hardi,?g, sponsored by Mike Tingley SUZUki, a lso. won th e 125 championship for the past four years. Harding won both motos , beating Dan McGuire (2-2) . The track 'was dust-free after a tremendous loa d of water was duinped on the track before the race : This created several m udholes , -the worst of which was located at the bott om of an uphill turn and took a large toll of bikes.and riders . OK , OCT. 2 Oklahoma fair grounds \.02 -mile clay oval was in fast enough • "~ condition for three riders to break Bubba Rush's old record of 24.25 , with top honors going to Denver's Chubby Armor with a 24 .03 sizzler. The Midwest Regional ' Novice Championship was the high point of the day with over 100 novi ces p resent. Grandmas and little sisters jammed the grandstand to cheer for their riders from virtually every area of th e nation . The cliff-hanger was that Oklahoma City's Ronnie Jones had handed California's west ' coast ' c h a m p io n Wayne Rainey th e first defeat of his career th e previou s. afternoon . after Rainey seized when the main had to be restarted . . _ With ten 10-man qualifying heats out of th e way . semis wer e won by Jones : Rainey , and Ricky Fiscel of Des . Moines. The tension for th e 8-lap novice main began to build as Jones and Rainey lined up for the expected duel. Zap! Jones ' was in the lead with Rainey on his roost, but not for long as th e first lap ended with Ra iney leading across the start grid with power to spare. Thethird lap saw Rainey in the lead by three lengt hs with th e pa ir followed by Rus s Davis of Vall ejo , CA and Rick Fiscel on h is pink and blue Yamaha com ing on strong. Rainey in cr eased his spe ctac u la r lead until he suddenl y disappeared into the pits on lap six. Jones th en had a comfortable lead to the . finish. followed by Fiscel , Ca liforn ia 's Keith Day. and Davis. Mike Tidwell of California was fifth and Bobby Elliott of Carrolt on , T exa s sixth.
