Eddie Lawson, who ca me up with a grand slam for the eveni ng , set a sizzling 22 .47 in the Open Expert half m ile. His reco rd is 22 .24 set last January. In the Open Exp erts. Eddie ca me off on top wit h Dorothy Rowe and David Skirvin in the two , three spots. Rob Selvy moved into contention by passing Skirvin on' lap two and a match race between Rowe and Selvy was in the offing. Dorothy had the power but Selvy had the tenaciousness of a bull dog and stayed right with her until the white flag lap when he just got by her enough for second. The Money half mile saw a real go for the dough between Lawson and Pee Wee Gleason . It was Lawson again off on top with Gleason and Joe Steffen right behind him and - surprise, surprise - Lawson did not run off and -leave Gleason as he has been known to do on more than one occ asion. Joe Steffen had third for two laps before Ammex-mounted Terry Singleton got by h im . Two laps later Stan Kinse y. aboard another Butch Silva Yamaha, took over third and Steffen started making his comeback, moving by Singleton into fourth . When the checkered came out it was Lawson, Gleason and Kinsey, or a Butch Silva Yama ha san dwich with Ha rleyDavidson for the filler . To finish off his triple header, Lawson climbed aboard Todd Brown 's 250 Yamaha an d went for the gold in th e Expert half mile. It was H -Dmounted Don Tortorelli that out gunned L awson off the line but • Lawson passed Tortorelli coming low .out of turn four. Terry Singleton, getting faster every week, was a close third with Eddie San Rom a n fourth until Rob Selvy got by . On lap three, San Roman was out with a sick machine and John Lundgren moved int o his slot. On lap four Selvy drag raced Singleton on the front side and was looking for Tortorelli. It took him three more laps to get him and it was almost too late as the checkered came out as he edged by . Dan McWhorter had his name on the Money TT and it was his from the drop of the flag . Joe Steffen came off in the second slot with Washington's Sonny Bu rres. out for some practice. in third. Nobody was able to change order. Burres did not leave Corona emptyhanded as he picked up the gold in the O pen Expert TT. Bu rres was in complete command and David Skirvi n kept running into trouble with the second and third turns, loo king more the motocross rider than third p lace Don Glover. The second lap saw Skirvin take himself out and Glover with his distinctive MX style moved int o second. He got no furth er buthe sure let Burres know he was there . Dylan Neihart did aw ay with the 250 Expert TT with the same ease
