MORTIERN DATB.lNE Dick Mann wins Old Timer class By Sallee Hilton HELVETIA PARK, CA , OCT. 9 In the last three months Donnie Cantaloupi has won over $1 ,800. at Boss MX races alone. The 16year-old rider from Stockton is . continuing his winning streak to the delight of his sponsors, (Yamaha, FMF and Dirt Werkes) , as well as his savings account. This trip to Helvetia Park netted him top cash in the 125 and 250 Pro classes. . Another lfi -year-old on the road to success is Jerome Heiberger, a Maico rider from San Jose. Jerome has been taking home cash on a regular basis from the 250 and Open 'Pro purses. This time, second 250 and first Open money went in his pocket. . . In the first 125 moto. Pat Yoho (Yam) started out in front of Danny Dennis (Yam) , Randy Blair (Yam) and . Cantaloupi. It took only one lap to Tl;arrange the four Yamahas as first Dennis, then Cantaloupi made it by all of them. Later Bla ir took third away from Yoho, and that order persisted throughout the race, with the only difference being the, size of th e gaps between riders. ' It wasn't such an easy win for Cantaloupi in the second moto. Mark Fortin (Suz) got the holeshot followed by Dennis and Yoho. After one lap , Dennis had taken the lead and Cantaloupi was up to second. The two of them, pressuring each other, ran away from Fortin and Yoho, and battled for several la ps before Canraloupi got by Dennis to stay. t Right from the start , Cantaloupi had the first 250 moto sewn up. The action was behind him where Ernie Sullivan (Suz) was ' before Heiberger blazed on by. More good racing with . Brian Jodry (Ossa) and Mike Hersman (Hus) sent both of them by SulIi;'an too . It became a three way fight .'!.s Hersman passed Jodry and caught up with Heiberger, taking Jodry with him . Heiberger played it like a yoyo , first closing on Cantaloupi, then dropping back' to be harassed by Hersman and Jodry, and then repeat the procedure. One of these moves cost him the second spot as Hersman went by. Try as he may, Heiberger couldn't reclaim the position. " Cantaloupi and Heiberger went out front at the start of the second rnoto an d went all the way to ' the checkered flag , in that order. Jodry had been running third until Larry Wosick (Yam) did it to him again . In the first moto Wosick had taken fourth away from him at the last. minute , and this time he copped the third the same way. Hersman had worked up to challenge Jodry previously, but crashed himself out of contention. I Heiberger had an easy win in the Open class, with' no serious threat in either moto. He led every lap , and went far away from ' second place runner. Renny Bruns (Yam) had a - strong second all the way in the first moto with the action being the race for third with Tav Weinrick (Suz) holding it for ' a while, then Pat O'Donnell (Yam) and finally Jeff Jacobson (Yam). The second moto Bruns had to work up from seventh to take over the recond spot after O'Donnell gave it up by crashing. Lance Burgess (Yam) had worked up to a third finish . . . Dick "Bugsy" Mann scratched his entry in the Open Pro class and rode in the Old Timer Expert class . Mann J IF YOU LIKE THEBIG BOYS COM E SEE OUR J UNI OR UP A N' COMERS won both rnotos with half a lap to spare. His closest competitor was Gene Higgenbotham (Mai) , who led Bugsy for a lap before he realized what he ' was doing. H~ fell over from the shock, and in his nervousness couldn't ' get . going until all 10 riders had followed Mann's Yamaha past him . He did a good job of catching up to finish second. In the second moto Higgie played it cool and let Mann have the lead , settling for a much more comfortable second this time. Results in Results Section . . .. , W ow' TIME EVER! " FIRST JUNIOR SPEEDWAY NATIONAL , ~ OCTOBER 22, 1977 SATURDAY • 8:00 P.M. Walkingstick wins Sacto night MX ::1_ By Sallee Hilton SACRAMENTO, CA , OCT. 7 The mini classes started out with ' experts Steve Vlahos (Suz) and Shawn Walkingstick (Yam) right out in front. Vlahos got the first moto holeshot and held 'it halfway through before Walkingstick got by , which shook him so much he stalled out in a turn . First intermediates in the moto were Pat Piazza (Suz) who had been in front allthe way , and Jim Horn (Suz) who had worked up to . second. The lead ing no vices were Cary Stutters (Yam) and Steve Bast (Yam). Walkingstick got out front in the second round but had Vlahos r ight behind him all the way to the last lap when Walkingstick crashed and had to walk it in , giving Vlahos the win for that moto. Piazza and Horn again were first and second intermediates. This time John Roitinger (Yarn') was ' t he lead novice and Bast again took second. Walkingstick was back for . another win in the third moto after a lot of place swapping all the way · through the race, ending in a near tie at the finish . Piaz za had troubles this time and the intermediate win went to Horn with Chris Lewis (Yam) taking second. Jeff McCrary (Suz) copped the novice win for the third rnoto second going to Phillip Saldivar (Suz) . The three wheelers were back in force with a full field of 14 of the mighty monsters ' contending. The modified versions of the ATC 90s got out ahead of the stockers and a tough . fight was waged for first between Travis Reese and Rick Goodwin . Steve Roediger goofed taking the jump and took a crash instead. Meanwhile the "stockers" had their own battle going for first . Phillip Perinati managed to beat out Gary,Ratties for the win . The second moto was a 'h u md inger , wheelies, crashes and all. Reese and Roediger had a tight fight going until Reese finally put some distance between them. Perinati was leading the stockers u nt il he DNF'd and Rattles took over.. Stephan Bell wassecond , just missing out on the ove rall after Roediger, Reese and,' Rattles all bogged down in the final turn. The three modifieds out front again in the third moto offered more of the "snowmobile type action." Reese started out in the lead, but as his tire got flatter he dropped to second and held on to that spot as the new leader, Roediger, went way out front. Rattles again was first in the stock class and Frank Stover was second , The girls out there didn't fare too badly, and it 's a shame they weren't scored separately. ' Only one of the girls DNF'd one mota , the others finished fifth and seventh overall . \ A show of poor sportsmanship marred the third 125 Novice ' third division when a fight broke out among BRING TH E WH OLE FAMILY A ND SUPPORT OUR 11 TO 15 YR.
