The track owners didn't touch the track as far as preparation was concerned and the Toppers Club members were just as surprised as -the la rge turnout of fans 'a nd riders when they arrived a t ab ou t 6 :00 p .m . a nd found the track in h orrib le condition. Many ri ders didn't u nload at all like Paul Pressgrove, Bill Snyder, Steve Lewis, etc. Bu t everyone pit ch ed in a n d by 10:00 p.m, the track was a bout as ready as it was go ing to be. It was still very rough with several m ud holes but races were still close with only a few spills. Brent Rowlands took the 200cc final lead but Dale Schmick took over on lap two and won . But he was later disqualified for rid ing a 125 in th e 200c c class so Rowlands was declared the winner . The 250 fin al roared off th e line with J immie O 'D ell , Jr. and Scott Adams buried b ack in the pack. Bu t O'D ell p assed everyone on the inside wh ile Adams di d likewise on the outside -and the two ran off from the pack to h ave th eir own battle for the lead . Adams won ou t over the son of former National number 20 (jimmie O 'Dell , Sr .] but you ng J im must be com mend ed for his efforts as he was rid ing with his left hand and a rm in a cas t from a broken bone he receiv ed skateboarding! The 500 cc fina l was "The Battle of N a tional Champions" as it p itt ed AMA Am ateu r 500cc Short T rack C h ampi on R oger Sterl ing agai nst AMA Ama teu r 500cc TT Scrambles Champion De nnis Byrne (they won the ir titl es in August ) . The two jumped int o a quick lead and ran off from the pack. but spe nt t he first five la ps swappi ng the lead b ack a nd fort h, Sterlin g finally shoo k loose and won by three lengths over "T he Bu rner ," Bu t the fin al race of the evening was th e m ost exciting as th e big open bikes blasted off th e line with Tom Foster in th e lead followed by Da ve Mitchell and Ron Noble. These th ree ran off from the pack and fought it out with all three leading 'a t one time or another. At the checkered flag all three were bunched up with Mitchell barely nipping Foster. C.D . Martin had a chance to close the gap on current Open number one T im L infors , but crashed in pra ctice Saturday n ight at the short track and had a "one cylinder twin" during his heat at th is TT scra m bles. But in th e final . he took the lead with two laps to go , winning and pickin g up 11 poin ts on Linfors. . The 500 cla ss has form er num ber on e Bill Sn yder tied with current number one Dennis Byrne for th e point lead and in the fina l they jumped out in front . alon g with Ga ry Law rence , a nd battled it out th e entire distance and all too k th e chec kered flag i n a tigh t pack with Sn yd er barely winning over Byrn e .
