Lawson takes both Corona cash races By Elaine Jones r Jltike Patrick s ..." ~ . rtAMAHA at CORONA ' , ~J 0 1 E. 6t h St ree t, Coro na, CA ( 714) 735 772 1 Hand Washable ~a~ ,,. ~. .' ~:~ Othman Distributing Co . SEPT. 28 Ed die Lawson, aboa rd Todd Brown 's 250 Yam aha, picked up all the m arbles as he won both the short track and half mile Money races, going wire to wire for the victories. The short track saw the duel for second go to Mike Minnig and Joe Ste ffe n and when these two get together it's instant fireworks . Both ride the radical edge and are not above picking a line no one else would th ink of. That's the way it wen t with Steffen h igh on e second to Minnig's drop super low. The next time around woul d see them re verse the sit uation. The battle went on like th is until the white flag la p when Steffen m ad e the move that got him a round Mi nnig into secon d pl ace . The half mile Money race was a wild follow t he leader, which loosely translated means that even though they came a round in the same order they were running close and it was again Joe Steffen who came up with the place money ahead of Craig Armstrong. , Dorothy Rowe got all the kinks worked out of her 750 Yamaha and made all the boys move over as she won th e Open Amateur/Expert half mile. Jerry Greer got th e jump on her off th e line but power tells and by the end of lap three she was gone. Greer held off Mark Butler to take second . The 250 Amateur/Expert short track and ha lf mile were full of action as T erry Singleton and Dylan Neihart proved on the short track. Singleton, aboard hi s Gary Jones-sponsored Ammex is noted for getting good starts and that's exactly what lie did , taking the lead with Neihart riding double . It was a drag race down the front side on th e fourth lap that finally got Neihart the lea d but it wasn't until the checkered came ou t that he could breathe because Singleton had been close enough to shake hands. Steve Griffith rounded out the field with third. The ha lf mi le ha d Joe Steffen on top with Singleton a nd Neihart rig ht with him . Neihart got Singl eton on the second lap but didn't have enough to ca tch teammate Steffen. The ta len t laden 125 Amateur/Experts are a joy to watch . These National numbers of tomorrow are so go od it's scary , "Speedy" Pete Hames still glows as the brightest star but hanging right with him has to be Bobby Garabedian and Chris Cannon with the edge going to machine preparation rather than ability. The first lap of the short track had Garabedian in front, Hames second and Cannon third , all within an eye blink of each other. On lap two, Hames had dropped Garabedian to second and Cannon was holding in third. The fifth lap saw Cannon come . underneath Garabedian and move himself t o within striking range of Hames. The plan looked good on paper but didn't work out quite right on the track as Hames brought it home with Cannon second and Garabedian th ird . The half mile was almost an instant replay , except Hames got the lead immediately with Ga ra b ed ia n and Can non in th e two , three spots. It too k Ca nnon fo ur laps to get around Gara bedia n and tha t may not have h a ppened if Bob b y's bi ke h a dn 't sou red. Ca n n on still did n't have enough to catch Hames and again had to pla y the b ridesmaid role . Ga rth Beavers came fr om wa y off the pace to pick up third . Resu lts in Resu lts Section. Corona bounty hunters By Elaine Jones CO RONA , CA , SEPT. 25 T h e first nigh t of the Bou nty Hunt of DG -sp o nso red Steve Bauer saw him emerge victorious, but just barely. The first moto had Steve Shippy out on top with Bauer in second and Gregg Toyama in third . Sh ippy was able to hold the lead through the second lap but Toyama was passed by Terry Shekell. When they came around on lap three , Bauer was in front with Shippy hanging onto second and Shekell putting on the pressure in third. It was one more lap before th ings really started to happen . Shekell got by Shippy to take over second and with two laps to go he was knocking on Ba uer's door. As they hit the infield and headed for the " St a d iu m Whoop -d e-des." Shekell made his move , turned up the wick , and passed Bauer as they came down on the other side of the jumps. H e made the short right hander, flew off the launching pad and headed for home with Bauer a close second . W hen the rubbe r band snapped for the fin al go 'r ou n d , Ba uer was ou t on top with Sh ekell in hot p urs uit . T he two slowly pulled away from the rest of the fiel d as they started to duel b ack an d forth . Shekell would move up on Bauer on ly to have Bauer sh ut the d oor. Shekell , a crazy m an over the whoop -de -des. would g ain a n adva ntage the re but Bauer would quickly grab it away. Shekell tri ed everything short of a gun and took some wild chances but nothing was going to knock Ba uer out of the first place slot and as the checkered came out it was all Bauer with Shekell in second and Thorstensen th ird. Goat -Breke r gave a motocross exhibition as he literally blew away the 250 Pros, riding two flawless races. Aaron Bassett and Steve Cross were in the two , three slots coming off the line in the first mota but Cross met his Waterloo when Mark Rawley, aboard his Graham Sheet Metal Suzuki, caught up with h im and too k over third . He tried for Bassett but it just wasn't in the cards and he had to settle for third. The second mota saw Cross get the second off the line with Rawley in third. Ra wley made his move a little b it quicker this time a nd by lap three ha d moved into second. Rawl ey came up wit h second overall with Bassett thi rd, David W ill iams, a stranger to Co ro na for a long time , came back in style as he walked away with the O pen Pros , topping Don Glover and Ric k Taylor .
