Thornton , Gary Sigman , Ray Be irman and Gary 'Sug a r Daddy' Decker who continually changed places during the Sen ior race . At th e end of th e first lap, Erl had established a good lead over the pa ck . The end of th e second lap found Beirman running second with Sigman looking for any way possibl e to pass him . Thornton crashed. remounted then worked his way back up to third . San Gab riel Valley M.C .'s former president. Ray Beirrnan, was in an ou t and ou t war with Decker for fou rth . This battle continued until the tenth lap when Sigman, who was running second. la yed it down pretty hard and Decker went over a cliff wher e he landed in a tree - unhurt but without traction. Don Faux took advantage of th e situation and mo ved up to cla im first 250 and fifth overall behind Erl Thornton , Sigman and Beirman, The start of the open race found Craig Adams and Up-Tire's Mark Asbury sid e by side for the holeshot. The pa ir soon created a substantial lead with Asbury out front . On the thi rd lap, Asbury's Husky d eveloped severe engine problems, putting him out of it wh ile Adams went on for th e win and Gary Bates took second. Lance Tubbs, who has had a string of unkind luck lately, took the lead in the 250 class then increased it to a two minute. On the seventh lap, lady luck struck again and Tubbs threw a chain - thus making it his th ird DNF in a row . In the meantime , second place Mike Beirman dropped out of the picture while Allen Sine was slowly working his way up fr om beh ind Will y Ban velos, James Burt, Dave Wentz, where he finally passed Don Miller , giving him first overall. While B&B sponsored George Luther was claiming first overall from holeshot to the end of the 101·200 race , a series of m isfortunes wa s elim inating several of his stiffest competition. Warren " Ca p tai n America " Barr was involved in a head on collision during practice Saturda y when some (d eleted) was out pla yrid ing on the course - ba ckwards. Although Barr wasn' t seri ously inju red , his IT Yamaha needed such exte nsive repairs that it wasn ' t fully completed for the race and definately hindered his performance. Another seri ous contender was Stirling Hopson who got a great sta rt then went do wn on th e first loop which put him ou t of it. Louise Bates was Iron Lady of th e day. She raced her KTM in the 250 class with the guys th en jumped in with the girls where she took a first over Dawn Pairnentand Lynda Rem p, Pam Bukamier, who usually rides desert , was riding her first Grand Prix and she took fourth . SRA 's Jim Horton (Lord Calvert) sha red the fate of many bik ers when he learned how Escape Country got its name . He rolled his dune bu ggy down a hill Saturday then repeated it so well Sunday that it took all available un its to pry him out of the tight ra vine where he landed upside down. Results in Results Section. o .... u GOLDEN SPECTRO A ction in the slick stuff out at the SRA Grand Prix in Trabuco Cany on. J eff Bukamier and Gary Armstrong mix it up. number three overall winner was also a 500 Yamaha ri d er, but .only a n amateur. Bud Wanbaugh is a resident of Elsinore, and he shot through the ranks very quickly. In th e mini bike class, Ken Mclntire was first , and Tony Harris was th e n umber two fin ish er. The 100-1 25 class was conq uered by Garth Bea vers , and Rick Taylor . Don Milam a nd Allen Lowen, both amateurs in the 250 class , were the number on e and two finishers . The Open class winner was another Mike Montgomery, but this one is from San D iego. Joel W indham placed second, shy just a few po in ts. Steffen capped the climax b y clinching the 250 Expert class during the even ing's races. Joe was the victor of each moto by a long shot. Moto one, Rod Sexton was the number two rider. Sexton was once undefeatable at Elsinore, but due. to absence, (and a sour bike), Rod had to play second fiddle to Steffen. Larry Bird came flying in , in third . Steffen pulled the holeshot in the second moto . Rod was again second. Jack Smith was third, b u t coming off the jump, he slid too far and ended up facing the opposite way, stunned, but not inju red. Dorothy Ro we was next in line to take over third . The final moto , Steffen was all alone out front , Rowe was second this moto . Rod tried his best to get Doroth y, but his sour scooter was to her advantage, and they finished in tha t order.
