BOX L SPARKS, NV 89431 ORANGE, CA , SEPT. 25 Three guys were out to d o battle with the AMC masses, and each took care of his own business. Jeff Ward ro de tough all afternoon . Tim Tolar fought off tremendous pressures all day; and T .]. Warren took off to pilot himself into the number one place for the day. . As the Open Pros took off out of the first ~ate of the morning, Greg Youngblood shot out to an early lead. Coming around in the th ird la p . Youngb lood started to fa de back. T .]. Warren took command of th e charge a ro u nd the somewhat shortened track. With cond itions at th eir ultimate , T.]. led ' the entire race, wit h constant pressure bei ng delivered from Yamaha-mounted Mark Rodman . On the last lap of the moto, these two were side by side the rest of the distance . Rodman put on one of his best moves and slid by Warren for the first place honors . Ron Tebbs ran a distant third. Second moto, T.]. let it be known he was there to do business. Taking the holeshot , Warren pulled the entire field wire to wire. Rodman made his presence known also , but T .]. 's Ma ico withheld the force from behind and earned a first overall. Rodman had to settle for second money, and Ron Tibbs put his Husky into third. Excitement was one thing that the 250 Pros didn't lack. The racing was _ tight for the number two through five spots. Tim Tolar dominated the entire first moto . Grab th e holeshot and • never let it be taken away; that was Tolar's style . It worked. The racing going on behind among J im J( Dowmann, Tom Cross , Tim Welker , and Andy Kirker was unreal. Placings , changed often, but none had the time nor the chance to go out and challenge Tolar. The foursome rode tight for the entire race, with Dowmann leading Cross over the line and Steve Mo ntaque pulling Kirker through. Grabbing the holeshot again in the second race , Tolar repeated his first n moto victory. Again. tight racing went on in back of 'the Yamaha ace. Tom Cross literally had to fight off Welker and Dowmann. In his first ride ba ck with DG , Dowmann came off of his serious hand injury to finish a close fourth in the moto, even with his rear tire flatl Tom Cross held off Welker long enough to catch second place, which in turn got him second overall . Dowm a n n received third overall honors, and a good comeback. Totally dominating the 125 Pro class was Suzuki-ace J eff Ward. On the first turn of moto one, Ward p ulled out in front and was never heard from again . His lead p ulled the second pl ace Bob Stem by over half- a- minute. Mike Goodrick ro unded out the top runners in third. , For the second m oto , W ard didn't even need 16 of the 17 laps. The lead was taken by hi m in the first lap again , a nd no cha llenger appeared able to match the pace. Bob Stem couldn't do it and went in with seco nd overall . Mike Goodrick, Matt Devich a nd the o nly girl in the race , B a r b a r a Spielman , were fighting wildly . Goodrich pulled away to take third, leaving Devick and Spielman, in her first pro race with the guys and on a borrowed. stock RM. to battle for fourth . Devich got the better of the two . :.ss .~~~ !:)-U!J~ HARE SCRAMBLES! OCTOBER 9, 19n O) ~ ~ 1-0 V ..0 0 .... U 0 or Call: (702) 359-6611 (702) 329-9264 - ., _ .... With $1 ,000 being waved in their face , the American Motocross Club (A .M .C .) brought the pros out to Carlsbad Raceway in their mass ive, greedy numbers. By the end of the day , 125 Pros Pete and Tony Wanket, both Yamaha mounted , were to discover that they had more in common than just being brothers. The two walked off with $215.00 of the money offered to the top five finishers of the 125 pro class . For both racers though. their first and third overall finishing places were anything but easy. At the drop of the gate in moto one, a three way holeshot was shared by FMF rider Gregg Toyama (Suz), Jeff Ward (Hon) , and Toyama 's teammate Ron Turner (Suz ). By lap four Toyama and Ward put a great distance between themselves and the rest of the pack. Turner had to call it quits in the 125 class. with a pair of busted forks . Toyama increased his lead by the half way mark of the race, with Ward showing signs of exhaustion. Wanket took full advantage of this and assumed the second place spot. While Wa nket continued to close th e gap on Toyama , Mike Goodrich (Suz) and To ny Wanket both overtook Ward on the tenth lap . Toya m a su cceeded in ho lding off P . Wanket up to t he fin ish, while Good rich d id the same to T . Wanket. Ward trail ed in a distant fifth. In m ot o two, t hings got a b it confusi ng for the firs t few laps. Two riders, both named Tony Gomez, bo th of Yamahas , pulled a d uel holeshor with P. Wanket bringing up third . By lap four Wanket assumed second place and first by lap six . Toyama pushed himself into third place on the same lap with T. Wanket right on his tail. Robert E. Points wise, Toyama still took second overall with P . & T. Wanket taking first and third with fourth going to Goodrich. The 250 pro race was a runaway by FMF rider Gary Ogden (Suz) who took two unchallenged firsts . Second place went to Arden Hadley (VH) , who has proven to be a very serious threat to all • 250 pros. Tim Lunde (Yam) took home third place money after dicing with Hadley in both motos. but failing to accomplish his goal of reversing Hadley's, a nd his overall, finishing position. The open pro r ace looked like a nother r u naway b y Luke Messer (Mai) in t he first m oto. when his bike blew a rode th rough its b ottom cases, thus ending what could have been a glorious vict ory. First over all was taken by Husky-mounted Mike McGowen , finishing a head of Dave Gerig (Suz). who finished ahead of Dave Williams (Ma i). Fourth overall went to Scott Miller (Yam) , who, if not for a flat tire in the last few laps of the second moto , would h a ve undoubtedly finished third .
