It look ed as though McCoy was goi ng to get a top-notch start until he got shoved ou t in th e first comer a nd sp illed. R onny Gibson also went down in the crash bu t they all got up and walked aw ay. W hen McCoy's bik e was toted to th e p its, his ta nk had a hole in th e sid e a bout th e size of a baseball. Luckil y the bike was in worse sha pe than McC oy. . Meanwhile , Kenny Za hrt had taken over the lead a nd began to move out on his Bultaco , As soon as he started stretc h ing out his lea d , Shennan Schneller got a wild hair and was right on Zahrt's ta il. But Kenny (b ei ng th e racer that he is) wanted th e first overall for th e d ay. And he won it by finishing fi rst , Shennan Schnell er ca me in for a fine second place ride , and Steve Rawson scored third overall. Resul ts in Results Section. l.!') M Q) .c o .... u o Lett, Lunde, Blackwell and Fish collect Ascot wins By Rico GA R DENA , CA , SEPT . 22 FMF craftsman Cliff Lett (I -1) rode his Frank's sp onsored H onda to a big payday in the 125 Pro class. The first moto saw Bill Barlow sp rint to the ho leshOI with Lett and " Rad ica l" Ron T u rner's FMF bike close behin d . Ba rlow slipped to thi rd p lace on th e fift h lap as Lett and T urner bega n a wheel- to -wheel duel. L e tt p ulled out t he victory wit h Turner close be hi nd . T he start of the seco nd mot o was a ca rbo n copy of the first with Barlow again ou t front. Lett was too hot to handl e as he blew past Barl ow's YZ and was off to a convi n cing win . But th e racing was for seco nd as Ba rlo w and T u rner foughti t out. Turner slip ped past Barlow late in the race to grab seco nd overa ll. YZ-mountcd Tim Lunde too k the big bu cks in th e 250 Pro race. His victory d idn't co me easy this week as " Ra d ica l" R o n Turn e r doggedly chased t he T &O sponso red Yamaha ride r. Turner piloted his FMF Suzuki a rou n d t he corne rs a s quickly a s anyone on the track but Lunde had the pu ll in th e straights. T urner a nd Maico rider J oe Plante (3-4) started b a nging ba rs a t the finish of t he seco nd mot o with Plante going d own and losing th ird overa ll to Dave Mil ler(5-2). In t he 250 Int ermediate class, Edd ie Dr ake (1- 1) showed excep tiona l style wh ile he ran awa y with victories in b o th m OlOS. Bob Snowden (2- 2) pushed hard to catch Drake but it wasn 't to be. The 500 Pr o race saw the return of R ick Blackwell (1 -1) to the Asc ot tr ack. It was also th e return of the Austin, Texas rider to the winner's ci rcle. Blackwell has captured first place money on each of his Ascot outings. Bob Marino (3-2) and Don Melver (4-3) placed second and th ird overall respectively. On September 29th Ascot will be the site of a $75 bounty race with Tim Lunde being the target in the 250 Pro race.
