AFM Riverside;
Road racing tor

By J im Lester
RIVERSIDE, CA , SEPT. 25
12
American Federation of Motorcyclists (A.F.M.) drew a record
A $2 ,700 purse and th e ch ance to race
and practice at Riverside Raceway a
week before the AMA nat ional attracted more than the usu al tu rn -out of
AMA pros .
Dave Emde was a whole $225 richer
after his wire -to -wire victory in th e 250
GP . In on e la p Em de was already
t h ree seconds ahead of t he ma d
scra m b le for second pla ce t h at
include d Wes Cooley, John Glover ,
Mike Baeder, John Gidney. and Ron
Hlavka , Baeder and Gidney slipped
past Glover on the seco nd lap , and
Baeder passed Cooley into second
place on the next lap. Also mo ving up
was Hlavka , who finall y overt oo k
Baeder on lap eight to take his turn at
second place. Due to a scoring mix -up
the flags didn't come out in time on
what should have been the final lap.
As they crossed the finish line after ten
la ps Coo ley was back in second, with
Baeder and Hlavka side-by-side ten
feet behind. Hlavka fai l..d to finish the
last lap, and Cooley held off Baeder
for second. Fifth place fin isher Harry
Klinzmann spilled on th e cool -off lap ,
but fortunately escaped with onl y a
sever e bruising.
It 's probably just as well that Cool ey
got an extra lap in 250 GP. Earlier he
had been leading Klinzmann by a safe
margin in Open GP , only to mistake
the last la p flag fo r the checkered flag
and pull in a lap ear ly. Klin zmann
won that $175 first pla ce prize money,
but probably d id at least tha t m uch
damage to his 250 Yamaha lat er. An y
m oney left over he ca n spend on
bandages. It 's all deductible.
'
The d ay's other big cas h race, 125
GP . saw Phil ippe d e Lespina y
( Mo rb id e ll i) ed ge JodyNi chola s
(H ond a ) by a few feet at the flag to win
$125 . Jody later borrowed Phil ippe's
125 Morbidelli and rode it in 250 GP ,
where he ran midfield , turning times
as quick as I : 4 ~ (Emde was lapping
around 1 : ~ 5 . )
Paul Ritter again won the Open
Production
race
on
his
Euromartl Aero Union 750 Ducari ,
but had a real fight on his hands. At
the end of the first lap he , Leroy Gerki
(850 MOIO·Guzzi), Vance Breese (850
Guzzi), and Carry Keoshger ian (750
Honda ) crossed the fin ish line fourabreast! Paul managed to pull away at
abo u t half a second a lap , by turning
in some im pressive 1 : ~ 9 lap tim es.
T he Superstreet ra ce was an other
"knock down . drag out" affa ir. First
pri ze was a weekend in Las Vegas pu t
up by Del Amo Suzuki. Carry Bryant
( 1000cc
Yoshimu ra
Kawas ak i)
m a naged to hold th e lead most of th e
race , bu t Dick Kilgroe (Kaw) , Den nis
Sm ith (850 Del Am o Suzuki) and Bill
Henry (900cc shaftdrive Yam aha )
were ne ver more than a few feet ba ck
as th ey swa p ped positions. Kilgroe just
beat Smith to the flag for second.
