AFM Riverside; Road racing tor dollars By J im Lester RIVERSIDE, CA , SEPT. 25 12 American Federation of Motorcyclists (A.F.M.) drew a record A $2 ,700 purse and th e ch ance to race and practice at Riverside Raceway a week before the AMA nat ional attracted more than the usu al tu rn -out of AMA pros . Dave Emde was a whole $225 richer after his wire -to -wire victory in th e 250 GP . In on e la p Em de was already t h ree seconds ahead of t he ma d scra m b le for second pla ce t h at include d Wes Cooley, John Glover , Mike Baeder, John Gidney. and Ron Hlavka , Baeder and Gidney slipped past Glover on the seco nd lap , and Baeder passed Cooley into second place on the next lap. Also mo ving up was Hlavka , who finall y overt oo k Baeder on lap eight to take his turn at second place. Due to a scoring mix -up the flags didn't come out in time on what should have been the final lap. As they crossed the finish line after ten la ps Coo ley was back in second, with Baeder and Hlavka side-by-side ten feet behind. Hlavka fai l..d to finish the last lap, and Cooley held off Baeder for second. Fifth place fin isher Harry Klinzmann spilled on th e cool -off lap , but fortunately escaped with onl y a sever e bruising. It 's probably just as well that Cool ey got an extra lap in 250 GP. Earlier he had been leading Klinzmann by a safe margin in Open GP , only to mistake the last la p flag fo r the checkered flag and pull in a lap ear ly. Klin zmann won that $175 first pla ce prize money, but probably d id at least tha t m uch damage to his 250 Yamaha lat er. An y m oney left over he ca n spend on bandages. It 's all deductible. ' The d ay's other big cas h race, 125 GP . saw Phil ippe d e Lespina y ( Mo rb id e ll i) ed ge JodyNi chola s (H ond a ) by a few feet at the flag to win $125 . Jody later borrowed Phil ippe's 125 Morbidelli and rode it in 250 GP , where he ran midfield , turning times as quick as I : 4 ~ (Emde was lapping around 1 : ~ 5 . ) Paul Ritter again won the Open Production race on his Euromartl Aero Union 750 Ducari , but had a real fight on his hands. At the end of the first lap he , Leroy Gerki (850 MOIO·Guzzi), Vance Breese (850 Guzzi), and Carry Keoshger ian (750 Honda ) crossed the fin ish line fourabreast! Paul managed to pull away at abo u t half a second a lap , by turning in some im pressive 1 : ~ 9 lap tim es. T he Superstreet ra ce was an other "knock down . drag out" affa ir. First pri ze was a weekend in Las Vegas pu t up by Del Amo Suzuki. Carry Bryant ( 1000cc Yoshimu ra Kawas ak i) m a naged to hold th e lead most of th e race , bu t Dick Kilgroe (Kaw) , Den nis Sm ith (850 Del Am o Suzuki) and Bill Henry (900cc shaftdrive Yam aha ) were ne ver more than a few feet ba ck as th ey swa p ped positions.
