Just before Hersman got the white flag , Miller took him , and the finish went down Magoo , Miller, Hersman, Turner. (who had been in third and second before sliding out and dropping back) and Berluti in fifth . Miller went home with the lion's share of the $1200 for ' the class with Hersman being paid for second overall . Turner cashed in third , Berluti fourth and Dave Wood (Yam) fifth . Magoo made the final paying spot with eighth overall. Terry Clark and his Kawasaki finished second in both 125 moros . Dana Waxham (Suz) and Donnie Cantaloupi (Yam) each had a moto win and a third . The three-way tie was broken by second mota finish, giving Cantaloupi the win, Clark second overall and Waxham third . Waxham led all the way in the first moto while the second spot got all the traffic . Jim Wooten (Suz) held it for a few laps before dropping off the pace. Then it was Dennis Brand's (Suz) tum for a few more laps before Cantaloupi took it over. Clark had moved up to third and was- applying the pressure to Cantaloupi . In the last lap , Cantaloupi had a little trouble getting by a lapped rider, and Clark pulled into second. Cantaloupi got the holeshot and went all the way to the win in the second rnoto. Robert Norton (Yam) did an admirable job of chasing him for the first half of the race before appearing to tire. Clark and Waxham made it around Norton and Mike Preston (Suz) was still trying when the finish flag came out. Others in the pa y line behind Cantaloupi, Clark and Waxham were: Rick Woodson (Suz). Brand (four and eight) and Preston. Monday morning befo re the pros hit th e track , the th ird and decid ing mota was held for th e Sportsman ride rs who had run two motos on Sunday. The 125 . 250 and O pen classes were compe ting for a Hond a XR 75 'to be given to the top winner in eac h class. Shane Hybarge r (250 Novice Division III) . Shultz had maintained a fifth most of the way , through and finished in that position. Myers picked up the second of the eight paying places. Shultz got third overall, Fisk fourth, and Brian Jodry (Mai) fifth . Dan Turner (Kaw) and Dan "Magoo" Chandler (KTM) , favored to win in the 250 class, each took a mota win, but Southern Californian Dave Miller (Yam) got the overall. After leading the first four laps of the first mota, Magoo crashed and missed a couple laps , barely able to get in there for a 21st finish . Mike Hersman (Hus) CMC North's number one rider, had been running second and took over the lead when Magoo went down . Dan Turner started about 10th but managed to catch up to Hersman and take the lead away in time for the checkered. Miller finished third in this one and Allen Berluti (Hus) was quite a ways back but fourth. Turner had lapped all but eight of the fin ishers in a field of 36 entrants. Hersman led the second moto for awhile before Magoo motored on by, gaining the lead and eventually the win. Hersman hung in there as second Two 40-mile loops took riders from the Pony Express route around Davis Mountain to the west. ' Racers whipped through a field of sunflowers as Yamaha dealer Don Fuller got the holeshot. Don is known for riding fast in front if he doesn't crash. Pit Crews could follow the race through the Bees' unique broadcasting , system. As checkpoints relayed news of the race's progress and breakdowns, the desert denouncer, Jack Carlton, told the news over a public address. Checkpoint one reported Don first, Idaho's Bob Sward second , Scott Statham third , all open class : 250 KTM pro Preston Gerber fourth , Utah 's Kris Morgan fifth , Jay McGinnis sixth , prestons's brother Scott seventh, Kris' brother Kit eighth, Bill Hardman ninth and Kern England tenth.
