Maywood M. C . Don reached Check 3, three-fourths of the way around the course in 50 minutes, as Kelly Rowley , the first Powderpuff, was reported through Check L Fuller shot past the tires marking the home check , ' followed closely by Sward , Kris Morgan, Statham, and Preston Gerber. On the second go ·around Morgan passed Sward , who broke outside Check I . Morgan saw a place to try and pass Fuller, pulled up next to him , and, hit a big rock in the dust and silt. Next thi ng he knew a kind Honda rider was offering water. Kris got up and finished well" but behind the leaders. Meanwhile the winning N ovice , Dan Wade, came in from his one loop with Jerry Warren two minutes later. Mark Jones, a Utah racer who went to work for Fox Shox after getting his engineer's degree, likes to come back to race when he can. He moved up to .fifth place with Scott Gerber sixth. Jay McGinnis crashed. Kit Morgan was running seventh and Bill Hardman eighth. The rocks behind Davis Mountain were covered with silt on the second go-around, t he ' danger markers obscured. As his rivals ' broke Don Fuller slowed down his famous hellbent pace.. _ Powderpuff Kelly Rowley, the only one of four to finish the well-pounded, silty course, came in off her one loop as Kris Morgan arrived at the third check of -his second loop. Don Fuller won the race in 2 hr. 18 min. followed by Scott Statham and Preston Gerber at two-minute intervals. Scott Gerber came in fourth, followed by Kit Morgan and Bill H ardman, who founded the Desert Striders club but hadn't raced for two years . MarkJones . finished with a flat tire. There were 143 finishers out of 155 riders. ( Rocks caused most if not all of the crashes.
