T he 'Monday afternoon pro show
began the first 3D-m inute m ota for the
Open cla ss riders roaring ' awa y fr om
the gate. When they got the mse lves
sorted out , Phil Dou glas (Suz) a nd
j er ome Heiberger (Mai) , both fr om
San jose, were ou t ahead after ge tti ng '
around jim Fisk (Yam) . All three took
turns leading and crashing until Bob
Myers (Mai) go t ahead of t hem.
Heiberge r and Dou glas d evel oped
me cha nical p roblems and were ou t of
t he run ning . Mean wh ile , Darrell
Shultz, on .a Bu ltaco for Eu ro- Cycles,
h ad been ma kin g his ' wa y to t he
fo reg rou nd , as had P a r r y Klassen
(Yam) afte r start ing out abou t 20th .
Som e super r aci ng -devel oped when
these two, along wit h Da n Waller
(Mai) all ca me .together going for the
third place spot in the white flag la p .
T he resul ts at the end of that lap were
a DNF for Waller , a fou rth for Shultz
and Klassen taking third . Myers was
still in th e lead with Fisk seco nd .
Douglas again was th e early leader
in the second mota , but Klassen took
the lead awa y fr om him and held on to
it for the overall win . H eiberger had
his work cut ou t after a mid-pack
start, but he did a good job of it
