himself- repassed the very next lap .
Alex got back past the 14·year·old
sensation for good the next lap.
In the main Haney jetted off the line
and was never headed with Brian
Thompson once again second and
Filice third :Jorgy came from the back .
to pressure the kid and when the kid
blew it. throwing his Boss frame.on the
deck, Alex had his wheel on the wrong
side and very nearly ate the wall .
Jimbo surprised a lot of closed eyes
when he saved it and only lost one spot ,
to Mike Delacy. He copped it back to
still take third withJorgy fourth.
Ricky Burton resurrected a Gringo
for the 360 Novice win over Joe Leduc.
Kent McConnell tripped over from
Santa Rosa to win the Juniors over
Steve Ebright.
Dennis Huff was out celebrating his
new baby with a win in th e 360 Expert
on the Huff Cycle Bultaco over Steve
Ferroni's Honda , also a proud father
of late. John Tavis took a third , then
came right back on his 400 monoshock
Yamaha and won the 500 Expert over
Jim Mahoney. Jim Patterson surprised
himself by not crashing and won the
500
Novice /Junior
over
Rod
McCollough and Jeff Huggins .
LODI, CA. SEPT. 4
......
This had to be one of Lodi Cycle Bowl's
bigge~t (301 riders) nights in years.
There was a race at the Salinas
airport earlier and Doug Chancler
won both 80 and 100 Expert. He did
likewise at Lodi .
In the 250 Expert Main, "the start
told the tale with Kim Jorgenson
repairing a broken case to take the
lead.over big-brother Alex. Filice kept
up good pressure on Alex but couldn't
pass. .
LODI, CA , SEPT. 5
The 80 Experts lined up for a real
biggee and Mark Key came out the big
winner over a refurbished · -Bill
Arbogast and Greg Brewer. Tracy
Hays finished a distant fourth .
Doug Chandler got on his 100cc
Yamaha monoshocker and promptly
took over the point lead he hadn't held
in quite some time. Mark Key took a
second.
Despite problems in the 250 Expert
race , ' t he checkered fell to Alex
Jorgenson, who took "secon d overall
money in the series. The win dropped
Filice to third and made Haney the big
winner. Mickey Krusemann held the
front row for the second spot with
Geoff Lowe third in front of Haney
and Dave Ryan. .
.-
The problem came when the starter
signalled to three riders in the front
row who were over the front line. His
first indication were for riders 1·2-4 to
go back but when they wouldn't and
he went to get them to move , he went
for the first three and the third kid
hadn't moved. That is what was
protested but no outcome on the
overall as the race was run .
A King of the Hole race saw Kim
Jorgensen get an early lead, but he
made one mistake and let big brother
Alex by and collect the big bucks.

Jorgy and Jimbo
smoke Valley
short tracks
By Ann Carr
NEWMAN & OAKDALE , CA ,
SEPT. 9·10
Although rider participation was
down following the four Labor
Day races , competition was at a
premium ~s D·36 flat trackers
indicated they wanted more short
trackin' , Alex 'Jorgy" Jorgensen , the
master, and Jim 'Jimbo" . Felice, the
young veteran at 14 years and already
an expert, smoked the ever exciting
· 250 Experts in respective main events.
Jorgy nailed the start at Newman and
· proceeded to run away while Jimbo
reciprocated at Pioneer. Only Rusty
Davis , with two seconds, and Jeff
Haney, with a third and fifth , could
· maintain consistency between the two
races .
In the mini ranks Doug Chandler
stretched his hold on mini number one
by winning both classes both nights .
Some new faces dotted the winner's
circle. Jack Barton, of Salinas, picked
off ~wo seconds in the 100 Expert
main , while Larry Dunnagan -took his
first 80 Expert trophy at Oakdale.
Novices Jeff Tillery and Randy
Lagamarsino swapped 80 Novice wins
while Glenn Keema and Shaun Reyna
-I beat the juniors.
Turlock's Jeff Mason continued to
dominate the 125 Novices but received
strong challenges from Charles
McCleary and Gary Hegwood:
Jorgy's Can-Arns commanded the
250 Junior troops, with near-expert
Richard Arnaiz the only one to earn a
win . Stockton's Gary "Go get 'em"
Gallagher rode hard to a second and
third while Manteca's Gabe Burrola
had three second-place finishes. In the
250 Pro class it was no more of a
surprise to see Danny "Magoo"
Chandler (KTM) get three wins to be
top dog, with Kendall Powers (Yam)
taking second overall. Jeff Anselmo
(Mai) was the triple crown winner of
the Open Pros and Shawn Hybarger
(Yam) had the three second places.
An apparent crowd pleaser was the
Old Timers race. With the Veterans
out of the way in a race of their own
this time, the "old" guys got a chance
to show what they can do. Gene Ke lso
(Yam), a Junior, got off the line first
and held on to his lead against
pressure from the only intermediate
rider on the track , John McClure
(Yam) . Running third, second junior,
all the way was Ray Nelson (Yam).
Billy Hilton held down the third junior
position, following all the Yamahas on
a home made Honzuki (or Suzonda)
built and owned , by fourth-place
runner Jesse Dean who rode a
Yamaha . The second moto was almost
a replay of the first at its finish, but
with more mixing it up beforehand .
This time McClure was fourth overall
and Gordon Miller (Tri) took fourth
junior. The third moto was the real
kicker. After Kelso again got out
front, he slid out and Dean and Hilton
followed McClure by him. With
McClure a safe distance ahead , and
obviously planning on keeping it that
way, the heavy racing was going on
between Dean and Hilton. Those two ,
in their race for what they thought was
second place (neither one knew it was
McClure in front of them) swapped
places, raced over jumps and around
tight turns side by side. Finally Dean
got some distance and had a clean first
going with the checkered flag in 'sight.
But, Dean went down with only about
two feet to go before crossing that
magic line that proclaims winners.
and Hilton and Kelso both went by .
-Kelso got the overall win and trophy,
with Hilton picking up second.
