Dim eo , Neal Snarr. and Bu rgett got the shot in the seco nd round. In the second la p Bu rgett took th e lead and left a ll the actio n behind him . Ron Turner a nd Pa t J acobson got by Dimeo to start nagging at Snarr for second. Both na iled him on th e same stra ight to deal wit h eac h ot her the rest of th e wa y. Turner had a good hold on second at the one la p flag . then disappeared ha lfwa y through the lap. He was spotted pushing h is defunct b ike at the base of the firs t uphill. Jacobson' and Sna rr held in for second and th ird. The 250 Pros were led by G regson and Burgett in a '; now it's Mark, now it's Rick, 'now it's Mark" b attle all the way throug h the first moto, well ahead of the m asses. Even in the final lap they were side by side as Gregson t rie d to make it "Now it's Mark" at the flag . Rick held it , though . Pat Jacobson enjoyed a 'com fort a ble third until he lost his seat three-fourths of the wa y through . That cost him . Monty Mitchell held off a charge by Bob Elliott, wh ich started on the first lap , to nab third. . ' Gregson dominated the second moto all the wa y. Tad Gumbmann followed to th e flag. Burgett pulled in third . Burgett leaped into a big lead in th e Open cla ss whil e th e rest of th e crew sort ed themselves ou t. After a couple of la ps Barney Newman and Bill Cook m oved by Richard Earle and set ou t for Jeff Howard . Newman passed both in the pogo jumps, t hen Cook followed him by Howard . Rick had a big lead. but on th e last la p a flat re a r tire slowed him enoug h for Newman to go by. Monty Mitchell suffered alost seat in th is moto , too , but a pit stop and a roll of duct tape rest ored it . On the second race Bu rgett was long gone again as Rick Benek , Phil Oveland, Newman , and Cook argued behind him for several laps . Newman moved in to second again and was eating awa y at Burgett's time wh en th e halfway signal came out. On the next lap he slowed. scrutin ized the rear wheel and pulled off with a flat. O veland chased Cook the rest of the way . A drawing among the riders who had entered all five races brought Bill Cook $250, Phil Oveland $150 , and Skeet Hise $100 . Oveland became a hit through th e week on h is circa 1971 CZ . When ask ed wh y he still rides it he replied, " I like beating people on it. " • Results in Results Section. The series was an unqualified S !tccess for District 36 short track racing. NEWMAN , CA , SEPT. 2 Northern California's newest short track still needs a .lot of work but it's definitely going to be ready to go for next season. Tracy Hays swooped up the first two sm a ll bore mains with back to back. wire to wire wins over ' Doug Chandler. ' , Mark Andris and Tich Thurman continued to dog each other in the 100 Novice and Dewey Presses won the 125 Novice go over Thurman and Jeff Mason . Bob Trono won his 125 Expert heat race but his rear whe el stuck during the main. after he had supposedly fixed it , and Randy Taylor and John Pittman took the money and ran . Da ve Boyles held the win in the 125 J r over JoeyJaconett i. Freddie Crabaugh beat out sizzlers Da ve Zizzo a nd John Anderson for the 250 Novi ce honors. T he 250 Expert was a . real th riller . with Jeff Haney heading up the payoff line . Haney . on his KR Racing monoshock Yamaha. has been turning away a ll customers for the last three week s./Brian Thompson and J imbo Filice stayed in the groove for the nex t two spots with Rick Woods ho ld ing off Trono for his first -ever 'wh ite plate points on a ' standard KR/ND Yamaha . OAKDALE, CA , SEPT 3 Over 200 .riders and nearly 1.000 spectators made ' for a second great night of ra cing at the Pioneer Arena 'wit h a well -d one track by owner/operator Jerry Griffith . Jerry wants to sell or lease th e track now that he is heading up KR R acing effort. Jeff "T he Jet" Haney was up to his usual tricks . with lots of action in heat racing and mains sin ce Alex Jorgenson ' was off the Camel Pro Series.
