Pete Pesky (Pesky's Suz) had a tight race going on with Ricky Sharp (Sha rp s Cabinets). while Foulk. Veste r and Darrin Smith scrambled in the middle of the troops. Walsh made a final attempt to move on Peters. before the white flag came out, and went down leaving Peters an easy win. It wasn't long before Richard Wander plowed 't hr oug h to take the lead , leaving Powell and Larson still battling. From there on . Wander built his lead to win the moto. Powell went down in the tower tum. giving Larson an unchallenged second. while Jon Deno moved in to finish third. • The second time out, Wander had the holeshot. Rodger Brennan was breathing down his neck from the start. but as they rounded the first tum . both riders went down . Larson took over the front position followed by Powell and Deno. . With some temporary bike trouble , Larson fell back to th ird and found -hirnself in a battle with Rob Mullins, Larson was coming on strong again, moving closer to Deno, but Deno was concentrating on trying to get first 'from Powell. The - Deno-Powell battle .was at its height . when Deno ran out of gas with only two laps to go . Powell took the win , with Larson not far behind. With a 2· I finish. Doug Peters won the 9·11 ss« Beginners. Todd Walsh (Verdugo Hills Suz) was the front runner in the first moto. Peters worked every angle as he tried to get by. but Walsh shut him off. The two riders were handlebar to handlebar as they soared downhill heading for the corkscrew. but Walsh took the inside to maintain his lead. Damn Vester (Vesters Watch Repair) rode a steady third as he kept Mark Foulk behind him. Peters charged off the line to lead the second !Jl?to. ~hjs t~f!le positions Honda-riding Tommy Croft catapulted off the gate and blasted around the track to lead the whole Open Pro race. Mike McGowen (H us) held second until the ninth lap. when Robert Marino (Yam) moved in with Dave Miller (Yam) capturing third . McGowen was at this point in fourth . Scott Miller (Yam) and Bob Maxwell (Ma i) had the next pla ces. Marino locked up second . well behind Croft. with Dave Miller nd McGowen having a good battle for third . Miller crossed the finish line before McGowen. Croft again took care of business iri the second moto and showed all why he is someone to reckon with. This was the first time Tommy had been to Carlsbad since the Hang Ten U.S.G.P . when he ripped up the International class . Marino again took second with McGowen getting third in this race and overall. Moto Meister -sponsored Dale Anderson engineered his box stock 250 red racer off the line and around the reversed track with a pack of wide open riders after him . Hondaman Warren Reid wasted no time in piloting his Jon Re-tuned mount to the lead position. Alan Smith (Hus) followed Warren , filling the second slot. Anderson, Dave Miller (Yam), Allen Berluti (Hus) and CBM rider Wes Sutton were next. Miller began putting the moves on Smith when a • >
