The combined pro races 18 are 45 m in u tes long and real body thrashers. T he 250 Expert ride rs had the first gate and Jeff Vidic led the action with Arden Hadley (VH ) and Clark J on es (Suz) filled th e next two slots . Steve Rhyan (KT M) was a few places back and work ing to the front of the pack. Vidic kept his Yamaha to the front of the other riders for 10 of the 22 laps. Hadley swooped around th e leader and claimed the forward ground for himself. He took th e moto win . Jones piloted his Suzuki across the finish line in second with Vidi c third and Pet e Wanket (Ya m ) and Pat Snyder (Suz) following . . In the second rnoto Vidic again swooped the holeshot only to have Steve Rhya n rip his KTM around him in the l Sth la p to take over as par ad e lea der. Vidic fought hard to keep the q uickly advancing Jones from capturing second but J ones got by towards the end. Rhya n crossed u nd er the checkers first with Jones . Wanket , Vidic, a nd Kippy Pierce (Yam ) next. Clark Jones took home the major part of the payback with Wanket and Vid ic getting the second and th ird place money. If you wa nt to ge t n uts , try to watch a comb ined 125·50 0 Expert ra ce . Robert " Ba rba rino" Marino (Ya m) led the riders off the gate with Ricky Blackwel l (Ya m) .a nd Da ve Miller (Yam) ne xt. Ma rino was the lead er until a b roken mo unt forced him out of t he race. Blackwell took over as the leader of th e open bikes a nd smoked for the win . Miller was seco nd with Luk e Messer (Ma i), T im Tolar (Yam) a nd Steve Russell (Mai) finishing next. The " King" of th e de sert , Larry Roeseler (H us) was ou t doing battle. Moto two had Blackwell and Miller as th e leaders with Marino and T ola r following . New " Pa pa" Bill Rubly was ou t ca m paigning a new KTM around the track. At the end of 22 laps, Blackwell was still th e leader and got the overall mo ney. Miller finis hed the da y with seco nd , Tolar thi rd and Messer fou rth . Roeseler was fifth . T he "Bassett Flash, " Jim Gibson , made short work of the 125 riders as he smoked around the track in both motos to capture the first place money. Terry Clark (Kaw) .took two seconds for the next payback. Brett Meyer rode his DG mount to third in bot h ra ces to get the third overall. Fourth in the first moto went to Rick Ma ki (Suz) with T roy Lee (Suz) taking th e same place in th e seco nd rnoto. Bruce McDouga l (Kaw) was a welcom e addition to the ba nd of riders a nd he got th e credit fo r fifth overa ll. • Resu lts in Resul ts Section . Gillman, Hansen and Wanket storm CMC Saddleback By Patti Trotter ORANG E, CA , SEPT. 4 Another new Saddleback trac k lay out welcomed more than 300 riders who came to swoop u p some of the $1,200 purse that CMC offered for grabs. IR C T ire Company's ch ief re presentative was checking a ll of the winners' bikes to see who woul d get the $25 per tire that was offered to IRC users.
