Lewis finished second and Co upe third. Morris took the second 250 moro with Griego close behind . McNamara moved into second and then moved within striki ng distance of Morris . After two laps of battling MC!'lama ra too k over the lead. McNamara wheelied across the finish as Griego got by a pile up in the last comer to tak second. The 125 Pros were out first. Ra ndy Hess (H on) got the 34 Back in the pack was a "sleeper," Fred Griego of Dist, 37 . He was running sixth on the first lap and suddenly .in the eighth lap he was second behind Morris, who ha d regained the lead when McNamara stalled out. For several laps a real battle ensued. Finally G riego took . the lead on the backside downhill and stretched it nicely to the finish . Morris took second while Joe Stantich (Dist. 38) took third. A pil e -up occu rred in th e second comer off the start of the Open class. • Everyone was soon up and running again , with Chu ck Pettigrew (D ist. 37) in the lead and no one close behind. In the sixth lap . with a tremendous lead , he had t o drop out with bike problems. Suddenly a new leader , Chip How ell (Dist. 38) appeared from way back in the pack . Dean Wiggins of . Dist . 36 was in" the second spot with Eddie Gonzales (Dist. 37) h oldi ~g ho leshot a n d we nt WFO . T erry Shekell (Ya m) . Pete and Tony W anket (Ya ms) , a nd Broc Glover (Yam) gave chase, but Hess was go ne. Sh ekell was seco nd with Glover very close beh ind. Hess rook t he win with Pet e a nd th en Tony be hi nd. In the second mot a Hess again got" the holeshot and was ripping , with Glover beh ind a nd · th en Pete . Gl over caught Hess and moved out to the win , whil e Rand y held down second a nd Pet e fini shed th ird . Bob Elliot (Suz) holeshot in th e first 250 Pr o moro and led for a co uple of la ps until Tony W a nket (Ya m) got by. But wit hi n two laps Ellio t rep assed Tony a nd began stre tc hing ou t a mea n lea d . Com petition Cycles rider Ste ve Ryha n moved his KTM into third a nd was trying 10 get by Tony, but time ran out on Ryha n . In the seco nd mota Elliot was still in the winning mood with Tony behind . Escondido Suzuki rider . Ba rt Ragu e third. and R yh a n fourth, Ryha n moved past Ragu e , t hen by Tony, and began reeling in Elliot. Elliot could not hold Ryha n's charge and he sped 10 the win with Elliot second and Tony third . O pe n Pros was a R yhan sweep as Broc Glover was DQed for backing- up on the gate. Ascot: Lopez and Lunde MXthe night away By FJjca After a week rainout , Ascot Speedway again opened its turnstyles to the CMC MOTOCROSS. • The 125 pro-class saw Ray Lo pez . ex tend his streak to two in a row over his fri end a nd riva l, Tim Lunde . At the drop of the ga te fr om t he first mota , Lunde cha rged to the lead wit h Lopez rig ht by his side . Both flew thei r YZ Yamahas arou nd the adob e tract , wit h n ever mo r e than a ya r d sepa ra ting th em . Lunde pu lled ou t a big first p lace, wit h Lope z fin ishing seco nd . The shoe was on a different foo t for the second mot o whe n Lopez bolted to the lead with Lunde's pe rsistent efforts fail in g . Lop ez g rab bed th e firs t in th e all -im po rta nt second mota to win first overall m oney. Two-fift y and 500 Pro races were run together T hu rsd ay night , and th e crowd loved it . At th e drop of th e gate for the first mota , ac tion was hot and heavy with eight rid ers fighting for top posit ion in the first turn. Dave Er opkin , on a YZ 250 tangled with T im Lu nde and bo th went d own in a spe cta cul a r crash . T he rac e was black fla gged , wit h 'Eropkin taken from th e track by ambulance .
