"Are you man eno ugh to ride the Ut e Cup?" . as th ey participated in th e 8 th annual U te Cup Trial , held in th e high country of Colorado near Fa irplay. T he winner was Dave Burke , Jr. (Bul ), a 17· yea r- old high school student from Colorado riders dominated- th e trials, with Chuck Sutton ( Bu l] fro m Albuquerque the only out -of-state rider to break into the top ten with a fourth place finish. Boulder, riders Bill Burgener (Mon) and Morgan Ka vanaugh (Bu l) finished second and third . 21 and 22 po ints behind Bu rke . The UteCup is a two -day observed trials promoted by the Rock y Mountain Trials Association a s a premier trial s and is open to out -ofsta te riders who are not nationally ranked . The RMTA novice riders are not eligible , but are 'encouraged to help observe. This year few of the novices showed, so there was inconsistent ' observation/scoring from non · trials volunteers. . Land -use conflict developed a few days prior to the event when bow hunters com p la ined to the state over t he use of the Twelve Mile and Sheep Creek areas . where big horn sheep had been spotted , A Iso , . residen ts convinced the Forest Service t hat damage wou ld occur to those areas which had been designated as roadless " wild erness" . T he result was the elimination of eig ht sections and five miles of trails and roads ·from Saturday's loop . Trials masters Bill Brokaw, . Kevin Walker, and Kerrie Brokaw were able to set five replacement sections. but the quality suffered. In a public meeting held Thursda y night . the trial s riders conducted themselves' with dignity. and with the help of a large group from Michigan . made a good im pression on the local citizenry. This wasn't the first time that the RMTA was accused of trying to sav e the lives of big horn sheep by scaring them away from the hunters . Saturday's loop consisted of 14 observed sec tio ns on II miles of trails and 4-wheel -drive roads ridden twic e . Aft er th e allotted six ' hours , Dav e Burke came in with 16 . Morgan Kavana ugh with , 19 . 'B ill Schaaf (Kaw), Colorado's No . I rider, with 22 , Chuck Sutton with 24 , and Greg Sturm (Bul) tied with 26 apiece . Section five , d ~cp m ud with an offcamber bank topped ,,:ith a large log , was never cleaned all day. Many of th e less a ccomptfsh ed riders ' d idn't even attempt it, but struggled around the edge of the sec tion for th eir " 5" ., Sunda y's loop con sis te d o f 20 sections and over 20 m iles of roads a nd trails ri dden twice with an eig ht hour time lim it. Lik e Saturday's loop . th e trail led across Sheep Mounta in at 12 .600 feet. but in t he op posite d irection. After t he first loo p , Da ve Burke has lost ju st four poin ts and Bill Burgen er six. Most of the other ' riders did the 'sam e . Second day . lead ers were Dave Burk e , Bill Burgener , Gary Baughman (H o n ) with 36 , Morgan Ka vanaugh with 37 , Mik e Stokes ( Bu l) with 39 and Ken Pa yne (Hon), a ' young intermediate rider , tied with C hu ck Sutton with 40. Most of the sections were difficult and of good qu ality. Some, like .the "Ca b in" and "Co rkscrew" were /funky but fun , A few <;ompl,ained that sections were too hard . At the awards presentation, ' illum ina ted by camp la nt erns, Bill Bro kaw didn't"apologize for th eir difficulty, but sa id . " I don't kn ow of a more beautiful place to take a five!" . • . .
