Ca. 91 3 11 . 12 13188 2,8 272 quarters advises that this closure was prompted , by the "tinder - box " condition of all of the forests . despite the recent rains . The USFS explains that a Stage One Closure m eans campfires can only be had in designated campgrounds . A Stage Two ' Closure means that motorized vehicles may only be operated upon designated and signed adm inistrative roads, and that smoking may onl y be done in closed automobiles and in designated campgrounds , A St a ge Three Closure is a complet e closure to all of the public . Personally. I don't want 10 go nea r the National Forests in th eir present condition. primarily due to the fa ct . that I might be tr apped by a . fire caused by someo ne ' else's ignorance. And I certa inly would hate to lea rn of a sit u ation wherein a for est fire was caused by an off-road vehicle . But I am more ind igna nt about be ing treated as a second-class ci tize n. Logging operations , chai n saws, hikers , backpackers , ho rsem en , hunters , and fishermen are still all ow ed throughout the National Forests under a ' Stage Two Cl osure . Supposedly, person~ in volved in such , activit y will not be allowed to build fires or smoke except in' designated campgrounds, but does anyone truly believe that will happen? I If you would like to express your feelings on this subject , you can. write ' to Mr. Douglas Leisz , Regional Forester, USDA Forest Service, 630 Sansome Street, San Francisco , CA 9411 1. " But whatever you do, if you go into the National Forests be ' certain to sta y on the designated and signed roa ds (You know , the ones wit li the markings on posts like TN31 , et c.) . It a p pea rs that all trails are out, unless they have such markings. Stage Two Closure will be lifted just as soon as fire conditions im p rove. It wa s obvious by t he end of the -second lap th a t the win , barring a ny mechanical problems or ger -offs, was going to ei ther Hank SCOll o r Mike Kidd, The pair walked away from the remainder ,of the field , wh ich was being led a rou nd by Ga ry SCOll. Kid d got by SCOll o n the ou tside going into turn three and -he ld off Hank's repeated attempts to pass for the rest of th e race . Third place , a lt ho ug h held by Ga ry SCOll at the end of every lap. was for grabs th roughout th e race . Keen er got by Scott d own the backstraight on th e 13th lap , but SCOll took it ba ck down th e front stra ight. The Scotr/Keener battle was joine d by Eklund and Boody o n th e 15th lap , and Eklund got by Keener a lap later 10 hold off both Keener a nd Boody to the finish. • Behind the front runners th e sto ry was mostly "follow the leader ," since the track's groove prevented any passing, Jay Springsteen got by Bill y Schaeffer on the 14th lap to settle into his ninth finish ing position, . pulling Lawwill past Schaeffer at th e same time . Lawwill dropped back to 12th at th e fin ish . Dropping out of th e race were Billy Eves in the ea rly laps when " oil out of 'the breather tube got on m y rear tire and put m e sideways on th e straight, " and Willie Crabbe, whose Harley's " o il plug came out and the brakes went away.
