Taylor was in th ird whil e Pelto battled with Hadley for fourth . . McGowen had problems with his Suzuki and dropped out , vowing never t? part with his Montesa again . The racing was still very close . On lap six , McCoy took the lea d and was never seen 'aga in , This left Oswell to do battle with Taylor for second. The two went at it for most of the race, but at the lin e, it was Oswell. Taylor got second over all and Jacobs took th ird . McCoy also took the Open Pros. A bad start in mot a one gave th e first few laps to Mark Ellis (Ya m ) and Kelly Call awa y (Ya m). It took McCoy most of the race' to work his wa y up to the leaders but , once t he re, he took th e lead and kept it·. Callaw ay took second and Ell is th ird . Mot a two went much the same way, bu t Ellis D NFed and gave thi rd place to Keith Pat ten (Yam) . In the 125 Pro class , it was Steve Bau er (Suz) all the way. In both motos he was followed by Clint Carman (Yam), who held off Bill Robert son (Han) a nd Bill Pincka rd. . • Resu lts in the Results Sect ion . By Br ian George LONG BEACH, CA . AUG . 28 Every fourth Sunday, a race is ' held on a local track that deserves a lotmore action. Cycle Haven , a motorcycle park on Terminal Island , cu t thei r ra cin g program to . 'once a month , due to th e lack of publicit y. Th is not only hurts th e area , but th e riders as well , because th e tra ck is safe eno ugh for anyon e. and is t he setup for ju nior, and intermed ia te riders. The classes are not cro wded , a nd the raci ng gets really ra d ica l. When th e gate d ro p pe d to let th e firs t 125 and 250 com bi ned Intermediat e mot o go , Mike Craw ford nailed a beautifu l holeshot , and jumped into a n earlv lead . Yamaha -mounted Ron Kupk e ran a close second a nd was in hot pu rsuit of Cra ,,:ford , a nd on la p six, Kupke got by for th e lead. A duel eru pted q uickly for th e number one spot , and th e lead was regained b y Crawford by slip p ing underneath Ron three laps later. The 250 win went to Crawfor d , with Kupke tak in g seco nd a nd Mike Foley ca pt u ring th ird. T he 125 d ivision of th e first rnot o was another tight battle. A .J. Whiting too k th e lead and never lost it. Jim DeGa in e mad e things tough for A .J. by staying on his tail from th e th ird lap to the wire. a nd Ron Mabry fou ght bac k from a n ea rly getoff to fini sh third . . T he second 250 ra ce got unde rwa y. but this time Ron Ku pk e grabbed the lead and pu t on a beau tiful rid e to ca tc h firs t place after lead ing the entire mota. Mike Crawford ran dead jump on Miller and held him off for the first lap, but Miller took over and crui sed on hom e . Carnahan successfully beat back Suzuki-mounted Pete Hillebrecht for second. T he final go round was all Miller's , with th e re al battle fought for second. Phil Thorstensen was second off the line with H illebrecht and Carnahan in the three , fou r spo ts. On lap two both Hillbrecht and Carnah an put the move on Thorst ensen, dropping him to fourth . It took Carnah an one more lap to cat ch Hilleb recht, who ran into other problems th at too k him ou t of serious contention . When th e checkers fell , it was M ill er , Carnahan , and Thorst ensen , with the overall the same . For Miller , the 25 0 Pro was an insta nt replay, with th e ra ce really for second . The first mot o had Mick Jacobs out on top for on e lap before Miller took over. Kelly Callaway ran a close third, but J acobs was b locking • effe ct ively and it took Callaway up to the last lap to find a hol e and capture second. Mota two saw Miller get the lead, but th is time it was Callaway off in second , a hea d of Jacobs. Callaway effec tively kept Ja cobs in third until th e wh ite flag ca rne out. Ja cobs re turned th e favor to Callaway by blast ing by him an d tak ing away second a nd second avera II. Goa t Brek e r , ab oard a Pa Y I'I! Lawson , who cou ld count the n u m ber of ti mes he 's raced motocross on one hand . has not done too sha b by. La st week he won th e first mot a of the Open Intermediates. but th e second mot a saw both th e bike and him run ou t of gas . This week th e Up la nd ace ran awa y with it , holding a 17-second lead over seco nd place Paul Va ccarell o. La wson, a flat tracker to th e core, is tryi ng to talk t he racing di rector into smoothing th e tra ck out a nd maki ng it faster.
