Lap three was a repeat but the last lap saw Jeff Robbins take Webb's fourth spot away and with th e finish in sight it was Chuck and Mike . Cartledge one and two . Kevin Hopkins held first amateur . Jeff Robbins third expert second and third am ateur went uo juan Benivid ez and T om Allen . The Simi novice/ beginner ra ce had J eff Moeller in the lea d with Pa ul Krogstad giving him prob lems all a ro u nd the cou rse. Lap three was a su rp rise as Krogstad aced out Moell er for first. T heel kep t third . J oh n Hall er got ah ead of Bo b Ch arters but Charters kept first Beginner. Bill Eveland was right behind h im for seco nd beginner. third went to Mike McD owell who moved up fro m near last. T he Trailbike ra ce on th e Desert Rats co urse had Theel , tired of ea ting dust the previous race . out in front with O ren Beck and Bob Ishm a n going at it whi le Bruce Coker kin da . hung back waiti ng for an opportu n ity til ge t by the d icers, First begin ner Brya n Reyn old s came by wit h seco nd beginner Bob C harters m ak in g a nuisance of himself. Lap two . Beck got aced o u t of second by Ishma n : Dan T heel never looked back as he racked up th e overall. Ishman wa s second . Paul Krogstad bagged th ird . Bryan Reynolds ma intai ned first beginner spot. Bob Charters second . TheCBikers Getting th e holeshot , amateur Steve W iseman streaked across t he d esert with Brad Henson losin g no time getti ng to th e footh ills. Mik e Alex ander w~s right _ beh in d . t he n Tom Gra nt an d Mi ke Ma tlock . 'W isem a n co uld no lon ger stave off the hard charging Henson and relinquished the lead . but de cided that was it. The other cha nges wer e Ed Rod ine and James Vin cent mo ving a hea d of Matlock . and Gary Charters moving up five positions. . On lap three . " Down hill" Alexander dropped out . leaving third to Tom Grant. Mike ' Lewell yn m oved up two mo re positi on s as did Charters. Eri c Datolla and Phil Gorgone held on to third and fourth amateurs behind Randy Pearson . H en son took th e overall. Steve Wiseman was second and first ama teu r. Second expert went to Grant . third to Ed Rod ine . The a m a teu r/expe rt cou rse on th e Desert Rats sid e was a bit longer so the racers went three loops. St arting where he lef t off. .Henson assu me d the lead im m ed ia te ly follow ed by Charters " Ma tlock a nd Grant. James Vi nceru had hard cha rgi ng J ohn Tobin and Ed Rod ine o n his tai l. When th e , ra cers crossed th e pipe line road . first and second amateurs Stev e Wiseman and Randy Pearson were pushing th eir b ikes to th e limits. Tobin a nd Rodine . T he classi c battl e going on back in th e pa ck was betweerit he Woolmor e b rothers Russ and Dave . They sta yed 'together unt il th e last loop when o ld Mineshaft Prutsman wedged in between them . Matlock held on for the win . Second went to Gary Charters. th ird to Brad , Henson . First amateur again was Wiseman . followed by Gorgone and Lew ell yn . The novi ce /b eginn er ra ce had Gregg Johnston in the lead then it was R ick Davi s. Edd ie Ogden. Pat Cain and -'J a m e s St r a chcn . The first begi n ne r was Dave Simpson at 16th . · Loop two . Da vis was in th e lead and Johnston fa iled to show . Ed Ogden moved into second a head of a pie plater · whi le the rest a t th e posi tions sta yed abou t th e sa me . Da vis he ld on for th e win . Ogden took second . Cai n third . Paul Palmer pu shed his bik e pas t six rid er s to fin ish first begin ner . 13th overall. Second went to Da ve Simpso n . third to J ohn Hu ra. Lea ding t he ga ng _over Sim i's lon g bomb was previous winner Davis. Mike Easley. Eddie Ogden . Bill Parks. and Kevin She eh e follow ed . At the big uphill. Pat Cain was making a ll kinds of dust fo r first beginner John Hura . Loop two and three had no positi on ch anges. Mike · Easle y dropped out gi\'ing Ogden second oehind two -time winner Davis . Third spot went to Parks . Hura claimed first beginner honors. Lance Powers and Harry Cieszynski second a nd third . ' Women's Division T he " Foxy" ones sho wed u p in force for th e Desert Ra ts event as 22 wom en hea ded across ·the d esert. Daw n G ra nt (Up-Tite · H usky) had a slim lead on Trud y Beck ( KT M). Penn y Wallingsford wa s next but Kell y Wiseman got by on ly to crash. Penny stopped, then cont inued o n only to pe rform her own C & B in som e rocks. Lisa Christensen held th ird foll owed by fast moving T o ny VanKnapp and June Elia s. An other fa m ily duel was going on bet ween , Kathy and Shila · Hopkins two very fine . fast riders.
